Heath Ledger as the joker in The Dark Knight.
Screaming fans lined up in Manhattan to catch a glimpse of the stars of the latest Batman movie 'The Dark Knight' at its U.S. premiere on Monday (July 14).
Actor Christian Bale, who plays Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman, talked about the excitement leading up to the release.
"It's great. I hope it lives up to their expectations, you know it's wonderful to feel, when you have worked on something so hard and it's been a great cast, great film makers like Chris Nolan, and his brother Jonah Nolan, that it is appreciated. I hope it is but you know, let's not speak too soon," said Bale.
He took a moment to remember his late co-star Heath Ledger, who died earlier this year. Bale talked about the experience of working with Ledger on the film.
"Just his commitment you know. He was a wonderful character, great company. I wish and I expected to be friends with him for many years. It is tragic he is not here but I am here to see his talents and celebrate it and I hope everybody will, " said Bale.
'The Dark Knight,' directed by Christopher Nolan, follows Batman as he sets out to destroy organised crime in Gotham City for good. Bruce Wayne finds himself falling prey to the criminal mastermind known as the Joker, played by Ledger.
Veteran British actor Sir Michael Caine talked about the Oscar buzz surrounding Ledger. "My feeling is that he will get a nomination. I'd be very surprised if he didn't. I would be very surprised if he didn't get the Oscar. He has my vote anyway. I think it's the best performance of a villain I have ever seen and I saw it first on set. Which is a bit of a surprise. With Heath, we'd be sitting talking between takes and its just like you and me and then suddenly he gets up without any preparation and bang, he is this extraordinary character. Wait till you see it," said Caine.
Aaron Eckhart, who plays Harvey Dent in the movie, was emotional on the carpet ahead of the screening. "I'm so sad he's not here with us and doing these interviews right now. But we are going to honour him tonight," said Eckhart.
Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal also had great memories of the late Ledger. "He was so so free in a way that I think is so unusual for even the greatest actors so being around someone like that and acting with someone like that is really inspirational and fun," said Gyllenhaal.
Actor Gary Oldman, who plays Lieutenant James Gordon in the new Batman film, said he was confident people would enjoy the film.
"Pretty good really. It feels fantastic.I think it is going to be a hit movie," said Oldman.

Bill Clinton: Wills to campaign for Obama
Former president Bill Clinton said on Thursday that he would like to campaign in support of Barack Obama's candidacy "whenever he asks".
"We had a good talk and he said he wanted me to campaign with him and I said I was eager to do so", Bill Clinton said this at a press conference to announce his foundation's breakthrough on Malaria drug prices.
Bill Clinton pointed out that Senator Barack Obama is currently gearing up for his overseas trip.
Clinton said, "He is busier than I am on politics anyway. I just told him whenever he wanted to do it, I was ready, so it is basically on their timetable".
Bill Clinton and Obama spoke over telephone on June 30 in an effort to mend fences, three days after Hillary Clinton and the presumptive Democratic nominee appeared publicly for the first time in a show of party unity.
The former president remains a hero to many grass-roots Democrats, and can possibly help Obama to win over working class whites.
Bill Clinton was in New York on Thursday to promote an initiative from his foundation to reduce the prices of malaria medication.

SBI Life to offer health cover
Calcutta, July 17: SBI Life Insurance Company, a joint venture between BNP Paribas Assurance and the State Bank of India, will launch its first standalone health insurance plan next month.
“We got the approval of the insurance regulator for the product last month and at present we are upgrading our information technology system for this product. Hopefully, we’ll launch our first standalone health insurance plan in August,” said U.S. Roy, managing director and CEO, SBI Life Insurance Company.
Sensing big business in health insurance, the Life Insurance Corporation of India, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance, Reliance Life Insurance and Tata AIG Life Insurance have already launched standalone plans besides offering critical-illness riders.
Like other life insurers, SBI Life’s health insurance scheme will be a defined benefit plan where the policy-holder will be given a predetermined sum in the case of hospitalisation.
Only Bajaj Allianz has recently introduced a family floater indemnity plan that will reimburse the hospitalisation bills subject to the sum assured — similar to the mediclaim policies of the general insurance companies.
In 2007-08, SBI Life clocked a total premium income of Rs 5,622 crore, of which income from new policy sales was Rs 4,800 crore. “Our net profit for the year stood at Rs 34 crore compared with Rs 3.5 crore in 2006-07 and Rs 2.02 crore in 2005-06,” Roy said. The life insurer reported net profit for the third year in a row. It was incorporated in March 2001.
“We have shown more than 100 per cent growth in business during the first quarter of the current fiscal. However, since we provide mark-to-market provisioning for our investments as a prudential practice, though it is not required for long-term investments such as life insurance. Our growth in profitability will not be much given the turmoil in both stock prices and interest rates,” Roy said.
SBI Life reported a premium income of Rs 426 crore from new business in the first quarter of 2007-08. Between April and June this year, the insurer expects a first year premium income of between Rs 800 crore and Rs 900 crore.
“For the current financial year, our target is to achieve a total premium income of Rs 10,500 crore and a first year premium income of Rs 8,500 crore,” Roy said. The company now ranks second in terms of market share among private life insurers in the country.

Top 10 Web Brands - Female users contributed more to the final charts
By: Denisa Ilascu, Internet / SEO News Editor
America's top 10 web brands for June starts with Google and ends with Apple. The ranking was made according to the number of unique users in the U.S. that visited certain pages, and was disclosed by Nielsen Ratings. Google has all the reasons to show off in front of its competitors, since its properties attracted more than 120 million users in a single month.
Yahoo! doesn't have, overall, serious reasons for concern, because it ranked second, with approximately
113 million users. The company could have said "Finally, we're beating Google" if the criterion used as basis for the study had been the number of hours spent per user on the companies' online domains. With 3:06 hours spent on average by each visitor on Yahoo!'s pages, the Sunnyvale enterprise outruns Google by far, whose medium rate is of 1:17 hours.
The hall of fame is completed by MSN/Windows Live, Microsoft, AOL Media Network, YouTube, Fox Interactive Media, Wikipedia and eBay, in this specified order. The AOL properties added up 3:35 hours per user, the most in the entire chart, but the number of visitors didn't reach beyond 92 million.
The demographic composition of the audience shows that women are more involved in web navigation. 52% of the users were women, but their number of viewed pages is somewhat smaller in comparison with that of the opposite gender's, as also is the time spent in front of the PC. The most engaged web visitors are women and men between the ages of 35 and 49, which can be explained by the fact that this category is the most socially active and with responsibilities that demand searching for information by all means available.
The 18-24 age group has the lowest rate of webpage visiting, being surpassed with over 2.5 million by the smallest age group, between 2-11. Although many children use the Internet, the duration of their visits is the shortest. Moreover, the number of pages viewed per month hardly exceeds 500, which can be related to their precarious ability of fast reading or to the interdictions imposed by their parents.

Today is Nelson Mandela Birthday
Today is Nelson Mandela 90th birthday. He is a great man.
Nelson Mandela's quiet birthday has turned into a village celebration
Nelson Mandela, the man who rose from prisoner to president of South Africa, is celebrating his 90th birthday.
After a series of public, celebratory appearances around the world over the past few weeks, he is expected to spend the day at home with his family.
Former President FW de Klerk has led tributes to the man who succeeded him.
Mr Mandela was a member of the outlawed ANC under apartheid. He was jailed for 27 years but went on to become South Africa's first black president.
The last president of the apartheid era, Mr de Klerk, who was awarded 1993 Nobel Peace Prize along with Mr Mandela, described him as one of the greatest figures of the 20th Century.
"After his inauguration, Nelson Mandela used his personal charm to promote reconciliation and to mould our widely diverse communities into an emerging multicultural nation," he told reporters on Thursday.
"This, I believe, will be seen as his greatest legacy."
Since stepping down as president in 1999, Mr Mandela has become South Africa's highest-profile ambassador, campaigning against HIV/Aids and helping to secure his country's right to host the 2010 football World Cup.
In 2004, at the age of 85, Mr Mandela retired from public life to spend more time with his family and friends and engage in "quiet reflection".
Correspondents say the birthday event in his home village of Qunu in south eastern South Africa was supposed to have been a quiet affair, but there are now a variety of events planned including a local football festival, a concert and a dinner for 500 guests on Saturday.
