Bo Derek: Appointed as commissioner of CHRB

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the appointment of well-known actress and animal rights activist Bo Derek on Tuesday as commissioner of the California Horse Racing Board.

The 51 year old Bo Derek has been appointed to fill one of two vacant posts on the CHRB. The position and remuneration of $100 per diem are yet to confirm by the State Senate.

Bo Derek has served as spokeswoman for the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act since 2003 and has owned Bless the Beasts since 2000. She has served as chairperson for the Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Rehabilitation Special Events since 2000. Additionally, Derek has been appointed as the special envoy of the Secretary of State on Wildlife Trafficking and has served on the board of WildAid and the Galapagos Conservancy, Ecuador.

Bo Derek also wrote the book "Riding Lessons: Everything That Matters in Life I Learned from Horses".

Bo Derek will attend her first board meeting on Thursday at the Del Mar racetrack. She will join Jerry Moss, the co-founder of A&M Records and a prominent horse owner, on the board.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also appointed writer and TV producer David Israel as commissioner, whose credits include "The Untouchables" and "Midnight Caller".

The racing board of seven members supervise horse racing and parimutuel wagering at racetracks in California, enforce laws and regulations.
