MUMBAI: Sabyasachi Mukherjee has collaborated with GAJA, a brand of the Shree Ganesh Jewellery House Limited, Kolkata to launch his debut jewellery line that will unveil at the Spring Summer '09 season of the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week this month.
"The jewellery has a handcrafted, hand-me-down feel to it, much like what our great great grandmother would have passed down. It's vintage with a heritage element to it," reveals Sabyasachi who has deliberately removed stones and given a distressed, tarnished look to the pieces.
The jewellery will be available at Gaja-Sabyasachi stores the first of which will open in Kolkata, though initially the collection will be promoted through trunk shows across the country.
Sabyasachi, who started out as a jewellery designer and always wanted to get back to it, told us, "I've been talking to corporates for a long time but somehow things never worked out. Gaja gave me the perfect platform. It was wonderful; no one said I had to do shiny, loud jewellery!"
