Out on the east coast as she prepares for her Broadway role in All My Sons, Katie Holmes was spotted making her way around New York City on two separate occasions yesterday (July 30).
Looking cute in a sleeveless top, jeans and sandals, the former “Dawson’s Creek” actress casually strolled the streets as she took care of a few errands.
Changed into a different outfit, Katie was spotted out at another point the same day - walking around Manhattan with her bodyguard by her side.
The 29-year-old Mrs. Tom Cruise kindly stopped to chat to some firemen and have her picture taken in their firehouse before continuing along on her way.

Britney Spears: No More Sam Lufti
Feeling strong and confident, Britney Spears does not see the need in extending her restraining order against one time manager/pal Sam Lutfi, saying that they will never be friends again.
According to reports, the one-time inseparable pair have had no contact since February - when Britney’s mom Lynn Spears accused Lutfi of drugging her daughter. At that time Jamie (Britney’s father) was granted legal control of her affairs as temporary conservator.
The pop princess’s court appointed attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, says: “Britney has made clear to everyone, that she does not want to be further harassed or contacted in any way by Osama ‘Sam’ Lutfi, now or at any time in the future.”
According to Ingham, Jamie can legally control who his daughter sees, stating: “During the temporary conservatorship, the conservators have the power to insure that Lutfi will not harm Britney anymore.”
He adds that once the restraining order is over, Spears will continue to have zero contact with Lutfi. “If Mr. Lutfi makes any future attempt to contact Britney after the temporary conservatorship has concluded,” he said, “Britney has made clear she will take all appropriate legal action.”
It seems as if Lutfi is not going to fight Britney and her family’s wishes, as he said in his own statement: “Mr. Lutfi and Mr. Spears have mutually agreed in private that no hearing or order is necessary at this time.”

Alex Rodriguez Speaks Out On Divorce
Divorce is never pleasant, especially if there are children involved. And after keeping quiet for nearly four weeks, New York Yankees all-star Alex Rodriguez is finally speaking up and responding to his wife’s demand for divorce.
In the documents filed on July 7th by Cynthia Rodriguez, the Yankee slugger’s wife and the mother of his two children, claimed “emotional abandonment.”
Cynthia asked to keep their $12 million Coral Gables mansion and to receive a cut of the earnings that he made throughout the duration of their marriage. Although Madonna was not mentioned in the filing, Cynthia’s attorney says that her husband’s relationship with the singer was “an affair of the heart” and “the last straw.”
A-Rod admitted that their marriage is “irretrievably broken.” He pointed out that Florida is a no fault state and he criticized his wife for bringing up “immaterial and impertinent” issues like his alleged “extra marital affairs and other marital misconduct.”
He also argued that the divorce settlement should be settled by the prenup that Cynthia signed a month before their wedding in 2002. According to the document, Cynthia signed the prenup “with the assistance of counsel of her own choosing, freely and voluntarily ... and with full and complete financial disclosure of husband’s income, assets and liabilities.”
As for their two children (Natasha 3 & Ella 3 months), Rodriquez acknowledges that he should pay child support and he asked the court to determine a fair amount. He requested that the couple share parental responsibility for their daughter’s “wealth, health, education and religious upbringing.”
Rodriguez also admitted that Cynthia is a “loving and nurturing mother” and he suggested the two work out a time to discuss the custody schedule without the courts intervention.
A-Rod’s attorneys said: “The husband requests that both parties are designated as ‘co-residential’ parents, realizing that the children are likely to spend more time with wife given the realities of husband’s professional life.”

Jet-Setting Selena Gomez
Disney darling Selena Gomez was spotted preparing to catch a departing flight out of LAX Airport on Wednesday (July 30).
The “Wizards of Waverly Place” starlet listened to her iPod as she made her way through the airport terminal, sporting a cute “We all scream for ice cream” t-shirt.
Meanwhile, Ms Gomez has dismissed claims that there’s a feud between herself and fellow Disney star Miley Cyrus, explaining: “It’s just the media wanting something to talk about and wanting us to fight, and there’s nothing there to talk about.”
As for rumors that she’s courting Cyrus’ ex Nick Jonas, Selena said, “Everywhere you go, you’re hearing things that are untrue. You’ve just got to learn that if I don’t say it, physically out of my mouth on camera, it’s not true.”

Pete not over Kate
I never thought we'd actually write this - but we are feeling a little bit of sympathy for Pete Doherty.
Yes, we did say Pete Doherty - the Babyshambles frontman who is better known for his drug antics and personal life than his music.
The singer has now shown his soft side and confessed he is heartbroken since he split from Kate Moss.
The pair ended their romance a year ago - yes it's been that long. But Pete says he hasn't been able to have a relationship with anyone else since.
He told The Sun: "I haven't shacked up with anyone since. I haven't shared my life with anyone."
He added: "When you split up with someone you're seriously in love with, it takes a lot of time before you even realise you're upset. You know? It just hits you."
Pete revealed he has not spoken to the model since their split. Kate is now dating The Kills singer Jamie Hince.
To rub salt into Pete's wounds he won't be happy to hear that Kate reportedly wants to start a family with Jamie too.
Oh dear, never mind Pete. Maybe if you have a good wash and get your act together you could land yourself another supermodel one day.

Shark Bites Ryan Seacrest
American Idol host Ryan Seacrest is recovering after he was bitten by a shark over the weekend. The TV personality was swimming in the ocean off California when his foot was nibbled by the baby predator.
He says, "I was bitten by a shark... (there were) a thousand people in the ocean, and I get bit by the shark."
According to the DJ, the tiny shark left a fragment of tooth behind - embedded in his foot - and he has the mark to prove it.

HILARY SWANK BIOGRAPHY
HILARY SWANK BIO
Born: 30 July 1974
Where: Lincoln, Nebraska, USA
Awards: Won 2 Oscars, 2 Golden Globes, nominated for 1 BAFTA
Height: 5' 7"
Filmography: The Complete List
Hilary Swank's early roles did not bode well for a future career as a "serious" actress. Making her screen debut in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, then headlining in the third sequel to The Karate Kid before winding up in that thespian graveyard Beverly Hills 90120, she was surely destined for artistic oblivion. Even after winning an Oscar for her extraordinary performance as the doomed cross-dresser Teena Brandon in Boys Don't Cry she was immediately forgotten by the public, most of whom never saw that notoriously "diificult" movie. So it was a surprise to most when, in 2004, she made a sudden and decisive return in Clint Eastwood's multi-nominated Million Dollar Baby, an Oscar-winning comeback supported by a very high-profile modelling assignment for Calvin Klein. Clearly that first Oscar had been no fluke - Swank's abilities could no longer be denied.
Of Spanish and Native American extraction, Hilary Ann Swank was born on the 30th of July, 1974 in . . . well, therein lies a question. Reports have been severely confused by the audition process for Boys Don't Cry. In order to win the confidence of director Kimberly Peirce, Swank told her that, like the real Teena Brandon, she was 21 and had been born in Lincoln, Nebraska. In fact, she claimed, she'd be born in the same hospital. Later, Peirce would discover that Swank had lied and confronted her, with Swank cheekily (and quite correctly) replying that that's exactly what Brandon would have done. The part was hers, but the lies caused problems for biographers. Swank was certainly not 21, she was 24. As for her birthplace, her management maintained that she was indeed born in Lincoln. Swank herself would often refer to herself as a mid-Western girl, and state that one of her grandfathers was born and raised in Iowa, just two hours drive from Falls City, Nebraska, the small town where Teena Brandon disastrously went to start a new life.
What's sure is that Hilary's father was employed by the airborne National Guard and, when Hilary was still pre-school, took his family - wife Judy, a secretary and later an executive, and son James - to live in Bellingham, Washington. With a population of 60,000, this was the closest sizeable American town to the Canadian border, nearer to Vancouver than Seattle. It was a beautiful spot, set between the sea and the Cascade Mountains, looking out to the San Juan Islands in the bay.
Soon, her father would change jobs. Deciding there was money to be had dealing in trailers, when Hilary was 6 he shifted the family into a trailer-park and began life as a travelling salesman, now operating mostly as an absent father. Attending Sehome High School (known for their aggressive but absurd Sehome Fight Song), young Hilary would excel at sports, particularly in the gym and pool. Indeed, as a swimmer she would compete in the Junior Olympics, while as an all-round gymnast she'd come fifth at the Washington State Championships.
But, despite her excellence in these physical disciplines, Hilary had a greater love . . . acting. When she was 8, one of her teachers had asked her class to write a skit then stand up and act it out. Swank had found the experience revelatory and, by the age of 9 was starring as Mowgli in a production of The Jungle Book (not the last time she would successfully pose as a boy). From then on, she would be a regular in school plays and local theatre, eventually being named Best Junior Actress by the Bellingham Theatre Guild. She would be constantly reprimanded by her mother for staring at people and mimicking their actions and expressions.
Despite the accolades, her school-life was not all plain sailing. As most of her schoolmates sprang from a higher social class - at least, they did not live in trailer parks - she would take a fair degree of abuse. Later, she would recall one incident when a group of her supposed friends ran past her and threw a screwed-up letter at the back of her head. On the bus home she was horrified to read the words "You think you're so cool, but you're not. You think you're so pretty, but you're ugly. You think you're so talented, but you suck". God only knows what her enemies might have written.
With her heart set on an acting career, Hilary was now to be lent a hand by ill-fortune. Her parents' marriage had been turning sour for some considerable time and, with Hilary now 15 and James old enough to cope, they separated. As Judy had just lost her job, she found herself at a major crossroads in her life. She had nothing in Bellingham, so she decided to seek a new life in Los Angeles, where Hilary might also ply her desired trade. So, with $75 between them, the pair took off for California in Judy's Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.
To begin with, it was far from easy. All down the coast and for the first two weeks in LA they slept in the car. Living off Judy's Mobil card, they spent much of their time in coffeeshops and automats at Mobil stations. Soon a friend would provide a roof over their heads, but this was in a house in the process of being sold. With viewers due each day, Judy and Hilary would have to vacate it each morning, making sure no one would suspect they'd been there.
Quickly, both of their main aims were achieved. Judy found employment and Hilary found an agent. She enrolled at South Pasadena High School, then Santa Monica City College but, with work coming her way, she'd drop out of High School altogether, completing her education by mail and with a succession of tutors. Her onscreen career began inauspiciously enough, in 1991, with a brief appearance in Harry And The Hendersons, concerning a Pacific Northwestern family with a comic secret - they have a seven-foot sasquatch for a pet. By the end of the year, though, her CV would have expanded to include Evening Shade, where she'd cause chaos by eloping with the son of Burt Reynolds' retired Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, and Growing Pains, where she'd laugh off the amorous intentions of Ben Seaver, one member of the starring Long Island family. Joining her on the credits for this, the seventh series of Growing Pains, would be a young actor brought in to boost the show's falling ratings by playing troubled Luke Brower. Fourteen years later, in 2005, both he and Swank would be Oscar-nominated as Best Actor and Best Actress respectively. He was Leonardo DiCaprio.
1992 would see Hilary make her Silver Screen entrance in Buffy The Vampire Slayer (which also saw the brief debut of Ben Affleck), playing one of star Kirsty Swanson's Valley Girl buddies, who pour scorn on the heroine for ignoring the trivial things in life and choosing to save the world instead. Her character, Kimberly Hannah, would have one of the movie's finest lines, the classic dismissal "That's SO five minutes ago". She'd then move on to more TV with Camp Wilder, positioned in one of ABC's renowned Friday night family-fun spots, but still a one-season failure. This would see Mary Page Keller return home after her parents' deaths, to raise both her own young daughter and her two teenage siblings. Hilary would play one of the best friends of Keller's sarcastic sister Melissa, who'd often hang out round the house as her own parents were always arguing. Though a comedy (Jay Mohr would appear as an entertainingly eccentric friend of the family), the show would cover many teen problems, Hilary at one point considering whether to have sex with cool new kid Jared Leto.
With her TV career on the up, Swank would now meet the love of her life. This was Chad Lowe, brother of the infamous Rob. This was in 1992, when Lowe was starring as HIV-positive Jesse McKenna in ABC's series Life Goes On (for which he'd win an Emmy in 1993). They'd hook up at an industry party and remain more or less inseparable from then on, arranging their filming schedules so they could stay together. They'd marry in 1997.
Onscreen, 1994 saw Hilary appear in Cries Unheard: The Donna Yakkich Story (also known as Victim Of Rage). Here ex-Charlie's Angel Jaclyn Smith got married to a cop, only to have her dreams of security shattered when he becomes obsessed with weight-lifting, steroids turning him into a psycho. Hilary would play Smith's step-daughter, who raises suspicions that her dad may have killed his first wife. The same year would come her first starring role, in The Next Karate Kid. This saw her step into the shoes of Ralph Macchio, as surly teen Julie Pierce who, her parents dead, is forced to live with her grandmother. Fortunately, she's taken on by the franchise's guru, Pat Morita, whose life her dad saved decades before, and he takes her off to a Buddhist temple for training in martial arts and, naturally, the waltz, enabling her to both bash up fascist bullies at school and score big at the prom. Her gymnastic abilities would, of course, stand her in good stead.
Though The Next Karate Kid was not a hit, her headline billing did at least allow her to become a little more prolific. 1996 saw her move on to the key role in the TV movie Terror In The Family, which reunited her with Joanna Kerns, Growing Pains' Mrs Seaver. Here Kerns played an alcoholic mother with a dentist husband, Hilary standing out as her increasingly aggressive daughter. As the situation worsens, the bickering turns to violence as Swank beats Kerns and repeatedly slams her father's hand in a door. Eventually she pulls a knife and is jailed, before a redemption of sorts is achieved.
The same year would contain two more cinematic appearances. First there was the Stephen King sequel Sometimes They Come Back . . . Again, where Michael Gross returned to his hometown with daughter Hilary to bury his mother, who has died mysteriously. Enter Alexis Arquette, who proceeds to charm Swank, much to Gross's horror as Arquette was one of a gang to took part in the ritual slaying of Gross's sister years before. Beyond this, Arquette is known to be dead. And soon, amidst much gore, so are many of Hilary's friends.
With very little going for it, the movie went straight to video. Her next effort did not fare much better. This was Kounterfeit, a low-budget crime drama which saw petty crooks trying to exchange dodgy dollars for the real thing. As ever, the deal goes horribly wrong and an undercover cop is killed. And now Swank, the cop's sister, goes seeking her own hardcore justice, only to find that the good guys and bad guys are not always what they seem.
1997 would see a real rush of activity. It would begin with another TV movie, Dying To Belong, which would attempt to explore the darker side of college sorority culture. Hilary would star as a student carrying out a personal investigation into the death of a friend who died during a "hazing" incident. As a matter of interest, when banning the activity, "hazing" was said by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to include "whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the elements, forced consumption of food, liquor, drugs etc" as well as "sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact and forced conduct that could result in extreme embarrassment". It's amazing any students survive, really.
Hilary would move on to another disappointment in the short-lived TV series Leaving LA. This was a drama-comedy set in the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office and saw the team investigating a series of strange deaths, including that of a man who drowned in a vat of chocolate, and a car-crash involving a group of Elvis impersonators. The show would feature future TV stars Melina Kanakaredes (Providence) and Ron Rifkin (Alias), with Hilary popping up as an office clerk.
Sadly, Leaving LA lasted only six episodes. Hilary, though, had plenty still going on. She next appeared in another TV movie, The Sleepwalker Killing, where Charles Esten turned himself into the cops claiming that he thinks he killed his mother-in-law during a somnabulist episode - but he can't be sure, as he was asleep. The situation's complicated by the fact that Esten's a gambling addict with huge debts and has already stolen $30,000 from his wife, played by Hilary. Thus Swank was handed a central and complex role as she must decide whether to back her traumatised family or fight for her husband's freedom. She was a great success in this, her first truly adult role.
Her only cinema release of 1997 was the oddity Quiet Days In Hollywood, which saw her unite onscreen with her longtime boyfriend and soon-to-be husband Chad Lowe. The movie was basically a circular chain of stories, each linked by a character from one having some form of sex with a character from the next. Infidelity, betrayal, theft and prostitution were on the cards, with Lowe playing a yuppie rapist and Swank starting and ending proceedings as a Hollywood hooker.
The year would end with yet another disappointment in a TV series. Well, actually, two. Having lost out in auditions to play Lucy Hatcher in The Practice (Marla Sokoloff took the part), she won a role in the ever-popular Beverly Hills 90210, joining the show in October, 1997. With the main players now out of college and seeking employment and happiness in the outside world, she'd play Carly Reynolds, a single mum who loses her waitress job after a run-in with Steve and his date. Luckily, Steve rather fancies her, sets her up with a new job at the Peach Pit and sets about wooing her. Of course, being Beverly Hills 90210, there's problems. He must forge a relationship with her child, then she loses the child in the mall, and another woman shows up claiming Steve is the father of her baby. High drama, indeed, with Hilary finally moving away to Montana to look after her father, who's suffered a heart attack.
Written out of the show in January, 1998, after just three brief months, Hilary was mortified. If she couldn't cut the mustard in Beverly Hills 90210, what chance did she have of ever being seen as a "serious" actress? In fact, her sacking turned out to be a blessing as within two weeks she was auditioning for the movie that would prove her breakthrough, Boys Don't Cry. The omens were good, she thought, on discovering that the director was to be Kimberly Peirce. After all, she'd played a character called Kimberly in the Buffy movie and Julie Pierce in The Next Karate Kid. Despite, or perhaps because of the lies she told about her age and birthplace, she was hired to play Teena Brandon.
First, though, came 1998's Heartwood, a tale from a small Californian town where mill-owner Jason Robards is risking bankrupcy because he refuses to exploit the surrounding forests. Hilary shows up as the daughter of the mill's new manager and is immediately hit upon by the town Lothario, as well as becoming the love object of young Eddie Mills, a slacker-type who spends much of his time in the woods. When Mills makes an astounding discovery, he and she then struggle to save both the mill and the town. It was, as it sounds, a feel-good Capra-esque story of sacrifice and human decency.
And then, in 1999, came Boys Don't Cry. To prepare for the role, she worked closely with acting coach Larry Mills, a former pupil of the renowned Stella Adler, who'd helped Helen Hunt to an Oscar for As Good As It Gets and would perform similar duties for Michael Clarke Duncan (for The Green Mile) and Swank's former co-star Leonardo DiCaprio (for The Aviator). She'd been introduced to him by her husband Chad, who'd attended one of his classes, and part of her training would involve spending a month as a man, out in the local malls, finding out what fooled friends and strangers alike, and what gave her away. The results were stupendous. As Teena Brandon, a girl from Lincoln, Nebraska who moves to Falls City and starts life anew as a boy, runs with the lads, wins the heart of Cloe Sevigny and comes to a horrible end, she was wholly outstanding. In fact, she was so good that no one was surprised when she beat heavyweight contenders Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Annette Bening to win the Best Actress Oscar and Golden Globe. A fair reward given that for her performance she'd only been paid $75 a day - $3,000 in total.
Swank would now make serious efforts to expand her range, even if it meant forsaking lead roles for interesting parts. After appearing alongside Brittany Murphy in a comic short directed by husband Chad (with whom she'd also co-narrate the audiobook Big Mouth And Ugly Girl), she moved on to The Gift, where Cate Blanchett would star as a psychic and therapist who becomes involved in the disappearance of tarty socialite Katie Holmes. Hilary would appear as Valerie Barksdale, the badly beaten wife of redneck Keanu Reeves, who comes to Blanchett for help and inadvertently brings Reeves' impressive wrath down upon her. Written by Billy Bob Thornton, it was a superior thriller and very different from her next outing, the period drama The Affair Of the Necklace. Here she played Jeanne St Remy de Valois, an orphan who dreams of returning her family to their former wealth and status. To do this, she pulls a con where she hopes to fool not only Joely Richardson's Marie Antoinette and Jonathan Pryce's cunning Cardinal, but also the devilish and insanely sophisticated Christopher Walken, playing Cagliostro, head of the Illuminati. Amidst court intrigue and sexy shenanigans, all goes well - but then it all falls to pieces as she inadvertently acts as a catalyst for the French Revolution.
Also featuring Adrien Brody and Brian Cox, The Affair Of The Necklace saw Swank in esteemed company, as did her next effort, 2002's Insomnia. A remake of a 1997 Norwegian movie of the same title, starring Stellan Skarsgaard, this saw Al Pacino as a jaded cop sent north with his keen young partner to investigate a murder in Alaska, land of the midnight sun. Up here, the guilt-ridden Pacino is in trouble as his partner may grass him to Internal Affairs and prime suspect Robin Williams has spotted his weakness and begins to play upon it. Hilary would impress once again as a local deputy, fresh and enthusiastic, who hero-worships Pacino but still pushes on with her job. Directed by Memento's Christopher Nolan, it was a brilliant drama and also a big hit.
Having starred in another short directed by her husband, this time the thriller The Space Between, Swank progressed to infintely lighter fare with the sci-fi action flick The Core. Recalling the outlandish sci-fi movies of the 1950s, this was based on the crazy premise that the molten middle of the planet has stopped spinning so, within a year, everyone on the surface will be fried by solar microwaves. In order to save us all, a hole must be drilled and intrepid heroes must journey to the centre of the Earth where they'll set things revolving once more with powerful nuclear explosions. Hilary would be one of these heroes, the hugely resourceful space-shuttle pilot Major Rebecca Childs and, amazingly, it was actually tremendous fun.
Moving up a step in the industry, Swank would now act as executive producer and co-star of 11:14, a quirky, $3 million dollar black comedy in the spirit of Run, Lola, Run. Flashing back from a fatal car accident, this would see several different stories converge, involving a drunk driver, a gang of bored, prank-playing kids, a manipulative girl running two boyfriends, and Hilary as a frustrated clerk plotting to rob the grocery store where she works. Following this, for the first time in six years, she returned to TV for the prestigious HBO movie Iron Jawed Angels. This took her back to 1912 as she played Alice Paul, a smoking, flirting, forthright and self-possessed agitator for women's rights. Advised to be more discreet by party leader Anjelica Huston, Swank and fellow radical Frances O'Connor form their own National Women's Party and begin to put pressure on political candidates, including President Woodrow Wilson during World War One. It was a great role for Hilary as it took her on a voyage of self-understanding and erotic discovery, as well as seeing her on a painful hunger strike when she's jailed and about to be certified insane.
The TV movie would see her nominated for another Golden Globe, but Swank was not pushing for screen accolades. Instead she returned to her first love, the stage, travelling to Charlotte, North Carolina, to play Helen Keller's teacher Annie Sullivan in the award-winning The Miracle Worker. This run was intended to be in preparation for an advance to Broadway, but production problems and then Swank's film schedule forced a postponement. She moved on to Red Dust, set in South Africa during the Truth And Reconciliation hearings where Apartheid-era soldiers and policemen admitted their crimes and were absolved. Hilary would play the lawyer of a black politician who confronts a cop who, years before, tortured him and "disappeared" his friend. But Swank's case hits problems when it's revealed the politician's memory may not be reliable.
If Iron Jawed Angels and Red Dust tested her thespian range, her next project would present a far more physical challenge. This was Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby, where Swank would star as a hillbilly waitress from south-west Missouri who seeks to escape her dead-end life via success in the boxing ring. To achieve this, she attempts to enlist veteran trainer Eastwood, but he refuses to work with a girl, until persuaded by Swank's persistence and the wise words of former boxer and lifelong sidekick Morgan Freeman. The movie would brilliantly chart the relationships between the three leads, and all three actors would find themselves Oscar-nominated (Hilary would take the Golden Globe and beat former rival Annette Bening for the Best Actress Oscar yet again). It was a reasonable reward for a difficult training process that had seen her learn the craft under champion trainer Hector Roca at New York's famous Gleason's Gym, where the likes of Ali, Frazier and Tyson had pounded the bags before her. It was also where Robert De Niro had worked to become Jake La Motta for Raging Bull (and where La Motta himself had trained). Swank would put on over seven kilos of muscle for the role, and exhibit a great deal of courage as she dared to spar with real-life champion Lucia Rijker.
Having now proven her abilities beyond doubt, Swank would continue to seek consistency in a wide variety of roles. Her next part would see her as a genuine femme fatale in Brian De Palma's take on James Ellroy's The Black Dahlia, concerning the real-life murder of Elizabeth Short, an aspiring actress found mutilated in 1947. Josh Hartnett would play a cop on the murder trail, whose investigation is complicated when he falls for both Short-lookalike Scarlett Johansson and Hilary, the decadent and bisexual daughter of a dodgy construction mogul. It was all about desire, suspicion and betrayal - as if Jack the Ripper had come to Hollywood.
Playing a femme fatale was now appropriate for Swank. Having for a while been considered somewhat masculine due to her fine performance in Boys Don't Cry, she'd broken down those barriers by becoming an athletic but very feminine model for Calvin Klein in 2004. She also represented Estee Lauder. She's very much a product of her age - a vegetarian from the age of 14, an animal lover (she helped to rescue trapped pets after the 9/11 attacks) and, as a keen skydiver and white water rafter, a woman who likes to push at the boundaries. She's clearly capable of remaining at the top for some considerable time yet.

Miley Cyrus: Moving Away From Hannah Montana?
Could it be? Miley Cyrus told press in an interview on Monday that “We’re thinking this is our last season (of Hannah Montana). It seems like it’s been on, like, longer.”
Talking about the hit series, which is about to begin production for its third season on August 4th, Miley tells: “I just think we did a lot of episodes. We basically did two seasons in one season last year. Usually people would do one season that would be, like, 16 episodes, and we did almost 30 episodes!”
The 16-year-old Disney starlet also points out that she has been playing her pop star alter ego since she was eleven.
Meanwhile, Miley’s rep won’t go one way or the other on the topic, saying: “We don’t know if this is the last season.”
The Disney channel confirms that statement, saying that their relationship with the show remains open-ended. Disney’s rep also states: “We have an option for a fourth season beyond this. We look forward to the Hannah Montana feature film coming to a theater near you in Spring 2009.”
Miley made sure to point that she’s delighted to still be a part of her Disney channel family, adding: “I’m still with my family. You know, they’re safe. They always feel like home, and that’s what I love about the company. They are family.”

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 Premieres in NYC
In a summer filled with record-breaking Hollywood blockbusters, it’s nice to know that there’s a good chick flick in theatres as well. And last night the stars of “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” glammed up the big New York City premiere.
Blake Lively, America Ferrera, Alexis Bledel, and Amber Tamblyn all showed up outside the Ziegfelt Theatre to pose for the paparazzi before heading inside to enjoy movie.
Miss Lively looked ravishing in a cleavage-baring floor-length orange summer dress as she mingled with her Gossip Girl costars Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick, and Leighton Meester, as well as her father Ernie.
And America Ferrera (who has been filming scenes with Lindsay Lohan for the upcoming season of Ugly Betty) showed off her sexy form in a strapless blue gown.
Also in the house was Ali Lohan, whose “Living Lohan” reality show has been a moderate success on the E! network.
“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” opens in theatres August 6th.

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden: Downtown Rendezvous
Ever since their daughter Harlow Winter was born, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden have been keeping a decidedly low profile. And yesterday they were spotted meeting up at a downtown apartment building for some family time.
The “Simple Life” cutie shielded her face from the paparazzi as she arrived at Granville Towers in Hollywood along with her 6-month-old daughter and some Coffee Bean refreshments.
Following a lengthy visit, Nicole and Joel both exited the apartment building with Harlow in her stroller. Like a gentleman, Madden took care of disassembling the baby carrier and placing it in the trunk before they drove off.
And when it comes to tattoos, it appears Miss Richie has had enough of Joel’s penchant for ink. A friend told press, “Joel promised Nicole that he wouldn’t get any more tattoos. Then a friend suggested a tooth tattoo, which is a photo imprinted on a tooth. When Joel told Nicole he wanted to get their daughter Harlow’s face tattooed on one of his front teeth, she shrieked, ‘Absolutely not!’”

She’s settled into motherhood quite nicely, and yesterday (July 28) Naomi Watts was spotted out for a walk with her one-year-old son Alexander Peter in New York City.
The awesome Aussie actress pushed her son’s stroller around the Soho district of Manhattan, looking very motherly chic in a deep v scalloped neckline dress teamed with cork platforms and three multi-length gold necklaces.
And not too long from now, Alexander is reportedly going to have a new brother or sister in the months to come. As previously reported by Gossip Girls, the “King Kong” actress is expecting baby # 2 with her fiancé Liev Schreiber.
As for her acting career, Watts has gone on record as saying that she’s planning on taking plenty of time off in order to focus on being a good mother. And rumor has it that she and Schreiber are planning a secret wedding for the not-too-distant future.

Paris Hilton and Benji Madden: Shopping and Dinner
Looking every bit the genuine Hollywood couple, Paris Hilton and Benji Madden enjoyed some quality time together yesterday with an itinerary of shopping and dining.
The former “Simple Life” babe and her Good Charlotte rocker began their spree at the Fred Segal boutique on Melrose and ended their retail outing at Benji’s DCMA store.
And although Madden doesn’t seem like the type to let anyone dress him, it looked like Miss Hilton may have had some influence on his ensemble, which closely resembled her own.
Later, the loved-up twosome was spotted leaving Koi restaurant in West Hollywood following a romantic dinner date. By then, Benji had managed to get back into his usual all-black getup, while Paris sported a t-shirt from Gwen Stefani’s label underneath a black leather jacket.

Kirsten Dunst: Sexy in Soho
It looks like Soho was the place to be yesterday for celebrity sightings. Not only were Naomi Watts and Lindsay Lohan both doing their thing in the trendy district, but Kirsten Dunst was also enjoying her time out and about.
The “Crazy/Beautiful” actress sported a sailor dress, black flats, and a pair of sunglasses as she casually strolled around with a few gal pals.
And during a recent interview at the 303 Gallery party in Chelsea, Miss Dunst explained to press the reason behind America’s preoccupation with voting on Tuesdays.
She said, “It’s all about America’s agrarian roots, see? November is the end of harvest, and the Tuesday vote allowed Sabbath-observing country folk enough time to horse-and-buggy it to the polling stations before Wednesday market.”
And while it seemed to work in the olden days, today “it’s not a holiday, and we’re one of the lowest democratic countries in voter turnout.” Her suggestion- “I would keep it the same day, just make it a holiday.”

Held at the Viceroy hotel in Santa Monica, California, the TMG International/CUUR annual “Style LA” runway show was quite a hit, with models sporting everything from sexy swimwear to beautiful dresses.
And Kim & Co. were having a smashing good time hamming it up for the paparazzi on the red carpet, before heading inside to get a dose of the latest trends in fashion.

Gillian Anderson Does the Late Show
With the big nationwide opening of her new flick “The X Files: I Want to Believe” Gillian Anderson has been doing some serious promotion. And yesterday (July 28), she was chatting up David Letterman on The Late Show.
The paparazzi caught up with the strawberry blonde pregnant babe outside the Ed Sullivan Theatre in midtown Manhattan, hamming it up with some fans and posing for pics.
And the expecting mother looked preggers-perky in a knee-length grey maternity dress with a cropped black jacket and some peep-toe heels.
Though she turns 40 next month (August 9th), Miss Anderson says she’s more than ready to embrace the ‘over the hill’ season of life.
“I’m looking forward to it. I gave myself such a hard time earlier on in my life, in terms of physical regimes and all that kind of stuff. You know, ‘Oh, my a**, oh, depressed, my thighs, oh my this and that.’ You’re often depressed in your 20s but later you start to care less. It’s less of a big issue, and that makes you much more content. I don’t follow any diets and while I go through stages of doing lots of yoga, I also go through stages of doing f**k all!”

Liv Tyler and Edward Norton Team Up in Tokyo
Though American audiences were introduced to “The Incredible Hulk” back in June, the Japanese got their first look at the green guy earlier today (July 29) at the big Tokyo premiere.
And Liv Tyler was in the land of the rising sun to help promote the comic book flick, looking hot in a strapless black floral print dress teamed with a pair of strappy black heels.
Tyler shared a few laughs on the green carpet (how appropriate!) with costar Edward Norton, who was looking dapper in a dark suit with a white button-up shirt and skinny black tie.
And while a lucky few hundred Japanese fans got to see the new flick today, the rest of the country will have to wait until its national release this Friday (August 1).

Bangalore Airport
Bengaluru International Airport (IATA: BLR, ICAO: VOBL) is a 4,050 acres (16.4 km²) international airport serving the city of Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. The airport is located in Devanahalli, which is 40 km (25 mi) from the city. It replaced the old HAL Bangalore International Airport. Construction of the airport began in July 2005, after a decade long postponement. It was expected to be inaugurated on March 30, 2008 but due to delays in air traffic control (ATC) services, it started its operations on the night of 23 May 2008, just before midnight.
Future plans for the airport site envisage expansion of the terminal and runways and generous commercial development, including business centers, tax-free shops, entertainment centers, malls and office space.

A plan is also being processed for a direct rail service from Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station to the Basement Rail terminal at the airport. Access on the National Highway 7 is being widened to a six lane expressway, with a 3 feet (0.91 m) boundary wall, as construction moves ahead.
A new expressway was planned to connect the airport to the city's Ring Road. The expressway, expected to be a tolled road, would begin at Hennur on the Outer Ring Road. However the State government, citing a study report of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), has told the Karnataka High Court that the proposed super expressway connecting the Outer Ring Road and Bangalore International Airport (BIA) is not feasible.

IISc Bangalore
iisc Bangalore
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was started in 1909 through the pioneering vision of J.N. Tata. Since then, it has grown into a premier institution of research and advanced instruction, with more than 2000 active researchers working in almost all frontier areas of science and technology. IISc is an institute of higher learning and is constantly in pursuit of excellence. It is one of the oldest and finest centres of its kind in India, and has a very high international standing in the academic world as well.
About IISc
Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata (1839-1904) was one of the extraordinary men who even towards the end of the nineteenth century was convinced that the future progress of the country depended crucially on research in Science and Engineering. He envisaged this Institute as destined to promote original investigations in all branches of learning and to utilise them for the benefit of India.
After consulting several authorities in the country, he constituted a Provisional Committee to prepare the required scheme for the setting up of the Institute. On 31st December 1898, a draft prepared by the Committee was presented to Lord Curzon, the Viceroy-designate. Subsequently, upon the request of the Secretary of State for India, the Royal Society of London asked for the help of Sir William Ramsay, Nobel Laureate. Ramsay made a quick tour of the country and reported Bangalore to be the suitable place for such an Institution.
On the Initiative of the Dewan, Sir K Sheshadri Iyer, the Government of Shri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore came forward with an offer of 372 acres of land, free of cost and promised other necessary facilities. Thus the original scheme of Jamsetji Tata became a tripartite venture with the association of the Government of India and the Government of Maharaja of Mysore. (Subsequently, the Government of Karnataka had gifted lands during the Golden Jubilee and Platinum Jubilee of the Institute making the current land holding of the Institute up to 443 acres.)
The constitution of the Institute was approved by the Viceroy Lord Minto, and the necessary Vesting Order was signed on 27th May 1909. Early in 1911, the Maharaja of Mysore laid the foundation stone of the Institute and on 24th July the first batch of students were admitted in the Departments of General and Applied Chemistry and Electrotechnology.
With the establishment of the University Grants Commission in 1956, the Institute came under its purview as a deemed university.
The Institute has been able to make many significant contributions primarily because of a certain uniqueness in its character. It is neither a National Laboratory which concentrates solely on research and applied work, nor a conventional University which concerns itself mainly with teaching. But the Institute is concerned with research in frontier areas and education in current technologically important areas. This is also the first Institute in the country to introduce innovative Integrated Ph D Programmes in Biological, Chemical and Physical Sciences for science graduates.
During the past ten decades many are the alumni and faculty who have gone out from this Institute to direct science and technology in the country, to create and nurture other laboratories and scientific institutions and to establish key industries. C V Raman, H J Bhabha, Vikram S Sarabhai, J C Ghosh, M S Thacker, S Bhagavantam, S Dhawan, C N R Rao and scores of others who have played a key role in the scientific and technological progress of our country have been closely associated with the Institute. The Council of the Institute confers Honorary Fellowship on eminent scholars and scientists and on those who have made noteworthy and lasting contributions to the cause of science and industry in India. Among the 24 recipients of this distinction are Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, M Vishveswaraya, C V Raman, J R D Tata, Vikram S Sarabhai and C N R Rao.
Besides formal education and research, the Institute has been playing an active part in offering short-term courses to scientists and technologists in service. The Continuing Education Programme covers a wide range of topics and over 1500 working scientists and engineers go through such courses every year.
In keeping with its aims and objects, the Institute has organised a Centre for Scientific and Industrial Consultancy through which the knowhow generated in the Institute percolates to industries via industry-sponsored projects.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research with organic links with the Institute has been functioning on Campus and also on Jakkur.
In all these endeavours, the Institute strives to contribute to the scientific, academic and technological goals of our country, with a keen awareness of its noble tradition and the need for maintaining a high quality in all its activities.

Bangalore India
Bangalore is the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka. Located on the Deccan Plateau in the south-eastern part of Karnataka, Bangalore is India's third most populous city and fifth-most populous urban agglomeration.
It is home to numerous public sectors such as heavy industries, software companies, aerospace, telecommunications, machine tools, heavy equipment, and defence establishments. Bangalore is known as the Silicon Valley of India owing to its pre-eminent position as the leading contributor to India's IT industry. Bangalore has developed into one of India's major economic hubs and was mentioned by CNN as one of the "best places to do business in the wired world".
Though historical references to the city predate 900 CE, a modern written history of continuous settlement exists only from 1537, when Kempe Gowda I, who many regard as the architect of modern Bangalore, built a mud fort in the city and established it as a province of the imperial Vijayanagara Empire. During the British Raj, it became a centre for colonial rule in South India. The establishment of the Bangalore Cantonment brought in large numbers of migrants from other parts of the country. Since independence in 1947, Bangalore grew to become the capital of Karnataka state. Today, as a large and growing metropolitan in the developing world, Bangalore is home to some of the most well-recognized colleges and research institutions in India, and has the second-highest literacy rate in the nation.

Bangalore Etymology
The name Bangalore is an anglicised version of the city's name in the Kannada language, Bengalūru. The earliest reference to the name "Bengaluru" was found in a ninth century Western Ganga Dynasty stone inscription on a "vīra kallu" (ವೀರ ಗಲ್ಲು) (literally, "hero stone", a rock edict extolling the virtues of a warrior). In this inscription found in Begur, "Bengaluru" is referred to as a place in which a battle was fought in 890. It states that the place was part of the Ganga kingdom until 1004 and was known as "Bengaval-uru", the "City of Guards" in Old Kannada.[5] An article, published in The Hindu, states:[6]
An inscription, dating back to 890 CE, shows Bengaluru is over 1,000 years old. But it stands neglected at the Parvathi Nageshwara Temple in Begur near the city...written in Hale Kannada (Old Kannada) of the 9th century CE, the epigraph refers to a Bengaluru war in 890 in which Buttanachetty, a servant of Nagatta, died. Though this has been recorded by historian R. Narasimhachar in his Epigraphia of Carnatica (Vol. 10 supplementary), no efforts have been made to preserve it.
An apocryphal, though popular, anecdote recounts that the 11th-century Hoysala king Veera Ballala II, while on a hunting expedition, lost his way in the forest. Tired and hungry, he came across a poor old woman who served him boiled beans. The grateful king named the place "benda kaal-uru" (Kannada: ಬೆಂದಕಾಳೂರು) (literally, "town of boiled beans"), which was eventually simplified to "Bengalūru".[7][8]
On December 11, 2005, the Government of Karnataka announced that it had accepted a proposal by Jnanpith Award winner U. R. Ananthamurthy to rename Bangalore to Bengaluru, which is its name in Kannada.[9] On September 27, 2006, the Bruhath Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) passed a resolution to implement the proposed name change,[10] which was accepted by the Government of Karnataka and it was decided to officially implement the name change from November 1, 2006.[11] However, this process has been currently stalled due to delays in getting clearances from the Union Home Ministry.[12]
Bangalore History
Lady Curzon hospital in the Bangalore Cantonment was established in 1864 and later named after the first wife of the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon.Main article: History of Bangalore
After centuries of the rule of the Western Gangas, Bengaluru was captured by the Cholas in 1024 which later passed on to the Chalukya-cholas in 1070. In 1116 the Hoysala Empire, overthrew the Cholas and extended its rule over Bangalore. Modern Bangalore was founded by a vassal of the Vijayanagara Empire, Kempe Gowda I, who built a mud fort and a Nandi Temple in the proximity of modern Bangalore in 1537. Kempe Gowda referred to the new town as his "gandu bhűmi" or "Land of Heroes".[8]
Within the fort, the town was divided into smaller divisions called "pētēs" (IPA: [pe:te:]). The town had two main streets: Chikkapētē Street, which ran east-west, and Doddapētē Street, which ran north-south. Their intersection formed the Doddapētē Square — the heart of Bangalore. Kempe Gowda's successor, Kempe Gowda II, built four famous towers that marked Bangalore's boundary.[13] During the Vijayanagara rule, Bangalore was also referred to as "Devarāyanagara" and "Kalyānapura" ("Auspicious City"). After the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire, Bangalore's rule changed hands several times. In 1638, a large Bijapur army led by Ranadulla Khan and accompanied by Shahji Bhonsle defeated Kempe Gowda III and Bangalore was given to Shahji as a jagir. In 1687, the Mughal general Kasim Khan defeated Ekoji, son of Shahji, and then sold Bangalore to Chikkadevaraja Wodeyar (1673–1704) of Mysore for 300,000 rupees.[14][15] After the death of Krishnaraja Wodeyar II in 1759, Hyder Ali, Commander-in-Chief of the Mysore Army, proclaimed himself the de facto ruler of Mysore. The kingdom later passed to Hyder Ali's son Tippu Sultan, known as the Tiger of Mysore. Bangalore was eventually incorporated into the British Indian Empire after Tippu Sultan was defeated and killed in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1799). The British returned administrative control of the Bangalore "pētē" to the Maharaja of Mysore, choosing only to retain the Cantonment under their jurisdiction. The 'Residency' of Mysore State was first established at Mysore in 1799 and later shifted to Bangalore in the year 1804. It was abolished in the year 1843 only to be revived in 1881 at Bangalore and to be closed down permanently in 1947, with Indian independence. The British, found it easier to recruit employees in the Madras Presidency and relocate them to cantonment area during this period. The Kingdom of Mysore relocated its capital from Mysore city to Bangalore in 1831.[16] Two important developments during this period contributed to the rapid growth of the city: the introduction of telegraph connections and a rail connection to Madras in 1864.
Bangalore Palace, built in 1887, was home to the rulers of MysoreIn the 19th century, Bangalore essentially became a twin city, with the "pētē", whose residents were predominantly Kannadigas, and the "cantonment" created by the British, whose residents were predominantly Tamils. [17] Bangalore was hit by a plague epidemic in 1898 that dramatically reduced its population. New extensions in Malleshwara and Basavanagudi were developed in the north and south of the pētē. Telephone lines were laid to help co-ordinate anti-plague operations, and a health officer was appointed to the city in 1898. In 1906, Bangalore became the first city in India to have electricity, powered by the hydroelectric plant situated in Shivanasamudra. Bangalore's reputation as the Garden City of India began in 1927 with the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the rule of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. Several projects such as the construction of parks, public buildings and hospitals were instituted to beautify the city. After Indian independence in August 1947, Bangalore remained in the new Mysore State of which the Maharaja of Mysore was the Rajapramukh. Public sector employment and education provided opportunities for Kannadigas from the rest of the state to migrate to the city. Bangalore experienced rapid growth in the decades 1941–51 and 1971–81 , which saw the arrival of many immigrants from northern Karnataka. By 1961, Bangalore had become the sixth largest city in India, with a population of 1,207,000.[13] In the decades that followed, Bangalore's manufacturing base continued to expand with the establishment of private companies such as Motor Industries Company (MICO; a subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH), which set up its manufacturing plant in the city. Bangalore experienced a boom in its real estate market in the 1980s and 1990s, spurred by capital investors from other parts of the country who converted Bangalore's large plots and colonial bungalows to multi-storied apartments.[18] In 1985, Texas Instruments became the first multinational to set up base in Bangalore. Other Information Technology companies followed suit and by the end of the 20th century, Bangalore had firmly established itself as the Silicon Valley of India.
Bangalore Geography and climate
Main article: Bangalore Metropolitan Environment
The Hesaraghatta Lake in BangaloreBangalore lies in the southeast of the South Indian state of Karnataka. It is in the heart of the Mysore Plateau (a region of the larger Precambrian Deccan Plateau) at an average elevation of 920 m (3,018 ft). It is positioned at 12.97° N 77.56° E and covers an area of 741 km² (286 mi²).[1] The majority of the city of Bangalore lies in the Bangalore Urban district of Karnataka and the surrounding rural areas are a part of the Bangalore Rural district. The Government of Karnataka has carved out the new district of Ramanagara from the old Bangalore Rural district.
The topology of Bangalore is flat except for a central ridge running NNE-SSW. The highest point is Doddabettahalli, which is 962 m (3,156 ft) and lies on this ridge.[19] No major rivers run through the city, though the Arkavathi and South Pennar cross paths at the Nandi Hills, 60 km (37 mi.) to the north. River Vrishabhavathi, a minor tributary of the Arkavathi, arises within the city at Basavanagudi and flows through the city. The rivers Arkavathi and Vrishabhavathi together carry much of Bangalore's sewage. A sewerage system, constructed in 1922, covers 215 km² (133 mi²) of the city and connects with five sewage treatment centers located in the periphery of Bangalore.[20]
In the 16th century, Kempe Gowda I constructed many lakes to meet the town's water requirements. The Kempambudhi Kere, since overrun by modern development, was prominent among those lakes. In the earlier half of 20th century, the Nandi Hills waterworks was commissioned by Sir Mirza Ismail (Diwan of Mysore, 1926–41 CE) to provide a water supply to the city. Currently, the river Kaveri provides around 80% of the total water supply to the city with the remaining 20% being obtained from the Thippagondanahalli and Hesaraghatta reservoirs of the Arkavathi river.[21] Bangalore receives 800 million litres (211 million US gallons) of water a day, more than any other Indian city.[22] However, Bangalore sometimes does face water shortages, especially during the summer season in the years of low rainfall. A random sampling study of the Air Quality Index (AQI) of twenty stations within the city indicated scores that ranged from 76 to 314, suggesting heavy to severe air pollution around areas of traffic concentration.[23] Bangalore has a handful of freshwater lakes and water tanks, the largest of which are Madivala tank, Hebbal lake, Ulsoor lake and Sankey Tank. Groundwater occurs in silty to sandy layers of the alluvial sediments. The Peninsular Gneissic Complex (PGC) is the most dominant rock unit in the area and includes granites, gneisses and migmatites, while the soils of Bangalore consist of red laterite and red, fine loamy to clayey soils.[23] Vegetation in the city is primarily in the form of large deciduous canopy and minority coconut trees. Though Bangalore has been classified as a part of the seismic zone II (a stable zone), it has experienced quakes of magnitude as high as 4.5.[24]
Due to its high elevation, Bangalore usually enjoys salubrious climate throughout the year, although freak heat waves can make things very uncomfortable in the summer.[25] The coolest month is January with an average low temperature of 15.1 °C and the hottest month is April with an average high temperature of 33.6 °C.[26] The highest temperature ever recorded in Bangalore is 38.9 °C and the lowest ever is 7.8 °C (on January 1884).[27][28] Winter temperatures rarely drop below 12 °C (54 °F), and summer temperatures seldom exceed 36–37 °C (100 °F). Bangalore receives rainfall from both the northeast and the southwest monsoons and the wettest months are September, October and August, in that order.[26] The summer heat is moderated by fairly frequent thunderstorms, which occasionally cause power outages and local flooding. The heaviest rainfall recorded in a 24-hour period is 179 millimetres (7.0 in) recorded on 1 October 1997.[29]

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP, Greater Bangalore Municipal Corporation) is in charge of the civic administration of the city.[31] It was formed in 2007 by merging 100 wards of the erstwhile Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, with the neighbouring 7 City Municipal Councils (CMC), one Town Municipal Council and 110 villages around Bangalore.[31]
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike is run by a city council. The city council comprises elected representatives, called "corporators", one from each of the wards (localities) of the city. Elections to the council are held once every 5 years, with results being decided by popular vote. A mayor and commissioner of the council are also elected through a quota system from a Scheduled Castes and Tribes candidate or to an Other Backward Class female candidate. Members contesting elections to the council represent one of more of the state's political parties. However, elections to the newly-created body are yet to be held, due to delays in delimitation of wards and finalising voter lists. There are expected to be about 150 wards, up from the 100 wards of the old Bangalore Mahanagara Palike. Elections are tentatively scheduled to be held in early 2008.
The Karnataka High Court is the supreme judicial body in Karnataka and is located in Bangalore.Bangalore's rapid growth has created several problems relating to traffic congestion and infrastructural obsolescence that the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has found challenging to address. A 2003 Battelle Environmental Evaluation System (BEES) evaluation of Bangalore's physical, biological and socioeconomic parameters indicated that Bangalore's water quality and terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems were close to ideal, while the city's socioeconomic parameters (traffic, quality of life) scored poorly.[32] The BMP has been criticised by the Karnataka High Court, citizens and corporations for failing to effectively address the crumbling road and traffic infrastructure of Bangalore.[33] The unplanned nature of growth in the city resulted in massive traffic gridlocks that the municipality attempted to ease by constructing a flyover system and by imposing one-way traffic systems.
Some of the flyovers and one-ways mitigated the traffic situation moderately but were unable to adequately address the disproportionate growth of city traffic.[32] In 2005 both the Central Government and the State Government allocated considerable portions of their annual budgets to address Bangalore's infrastructure.[34] The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike works with the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and the Bangalore Agenda Task Force (BATF) to design and implement civic projects. Bangalore generates about 3,000 tonnes of solid waste per day, of which about 1,139 tonnes are collected and sent to composting units such as the Karnataka Composting Development Corporation. The remaining solid waste collected by the municipality is dumped in open spaces or on roadsides outside the city.[35]
The Bangalore City Police (BCP) has six geographic zones, includes the Traffic Police, the City Armed Reserve, the Central Crime Branch and the City Crime Record Bureau and runs 86 police stations, including two all-women police stations.[36] As capital of the state of Karnataka, Bangalore houses important state government facilities such as the Karnataka High Court, the Vidhana Soudha (the home of the Karnataka state legislature) and Raj Bhavan (the residence of the Governor of Karnataka). Bangalore contributes two members to India's lower house of parliament, the Lok Sabha, and 24 members to the Karnataka State Assembly.[37] In 2007, the Delimitation Commission of India reorganised the constituencies based on the 2001 census, and thus the number of Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies in Bangalore has been increased to 28 and 3 respectively.[38] These changes will take effect from the next elections. Electricity in Bangalore is regulated through the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL). Like many cities in India, Bangalore experiences scheduled power cuts, especially over the summer, to allow electricity providers to meet the consumption demands of households as well as corporations.
Bangalore Economy
The Public Utilities Building is located on MG Road, a major commerical center in Bangalore.Bangalore's Rs 260,260 crore (US$ 100 billion) economy (2002–03 Net District Income) makes it a major economic centre in India.[39] With an economic growth of 10.3%, Bangalore is the fastest growing major metropolis in India [40]. Additionally, Bangalore is India's fourth largest fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) market. [41] The city is the third largest hub for high net worth individuals and is home to over 10,000 dollar millionaires and about 60,000 super-rich people who have an investable surplus of Rs. 4.5 crore (US$ 1 million) and Rs. 50 lakh (US$ 116,000) respectively.[42] As of 2001, Bangalore's share of Rs. 1,660 crore (US$ 400 million) in Foreign Direct Investment was the fourth highest for an Indian city.[43]
In the 1940, industrial visionaries such as Sir Mirza Ismail and Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya played an important role in the development of Bangalore's strong manufacturing and industrial base.
The headquarters of several public sector undertakings such as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Bharat Electronics Limited, Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) are located in Bangalore. In June 1972 the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was established under the Department of Space and headquartered in the city.
The headquarters of Infosys, India's second largest IT company, is located in BangaloreBangalore is called the Silicon Valley of India because of the large number of Information Technology companies located in the city which contributed 33% of India's Rs. 144,214 crore (US$ 33 billion) IT exports in 2006-07.[44] Bangalore's IT industry is divided into three main "clusters" — Software Technology Parks of India, Bangalore (STPI); International Technology Park Bangalore (ITPB), formerly International Technology Park Ltd. (ITPL); and Electronics City. UB City, the headquarters of the United Breweries Group, is a high-end commercial zone.[45] Infosys and Wipro, India's second and third largest software companies are headquartered in Bangalore as are many of the global SEI-CMM Level 5 Companies.
The growth of Information Technology has presented the city with unique challenges. Ideological clashes sometimes occur between the city's IT moguls, who demand an improvement in the city's infrastructure and the state government, whose electoral base is primarily the people in rural Karnataka.[46] Bangalore is a hub for biotechnology related industry in India and in the year 2005, around 47% of the 265 biotechnology companies in India were located here; including Biocon, India's largest biotechnology company.
Bangalore Transport
The Bengaluru International Airport is located in Devanahalli.Bangalore is served by the newly-built Bengaluru International Airport (IATA code: BLR) which started operations from 24 May 2008. The city was earlier served by the HAL Airport which was India's fourth busiest airport.[49][50][51] Air Deccan and Kingfisher Airlines have their headquarters in Bangalore.[52]
A rapid transit system called the Namma Metro is being developed and is expected to be operational by 2011. Once completed, this will encompass a 33 km (20.5 mi) elevated and underground rail network, with 32 stations in Phase I and more being added in Phase II.[53] Bangalore is well connected to the rest of the country through the Indian Railways. The Rajdhani Express connects Bangalore to New Delhi, the capital of India. The city is also connected to Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad, as well as other major cities in Karnataka.
Autorickshaws are a popular form of transport in the city.Three-wheeled, black and yellow auto-rickshaws, referred to as autos, are a popular form of transport. They are metered and can accommodate up to three passengers. Taxi service within Bangalore is provided by several operators commonly referred to as Citi taxis which can carry up to four passengers and are usually metered and more expensive than auto-rickshaws.
Buses operated by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) are also a means of public transport available in the city.[56] While commuters can buy tickets on boarding these buses, BMTC also provides an option of a bus pass to frequent users. BMTC also runs air-conditioned, red-coloured Volvo buses on major routes.[56] The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation runs 10,400 buses, connecting Bangalore with other parts of Karnataka as well as other states.
Bangalore Culture
The Lal Bagh Glass House, famous for its flower shows, is now a heritage monument.
Brigade Road is a popular commercial district in Bangalore.Bangalore is known as the "Garden City of India" [67] because of its greenery and the presence of many public parks, including the Lal Bagh and Cubbon Park. Dasara, a traditional celebratory hallmark of the old Kingdom of Mysore, is the state festival and is celebrated with great vigour. Deepavali, the "Festival of Lights", transcends demographic and religious lines and is another important festival. Other traditional Indian festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Ugadi, Sankranthi, Eid ul-Fitr, and Christmas are also celebrated. Bangalore is home to the Kannada film industry, which churns out about 80 Kannada movies each year.[68]. One of the most notable contributors to Sandalwood, as the Kannada Movie Industry is referred to, was the late Dr. Rajkumar.
The diversity of cuisine available is reflective of the social and economic diversity of Bangalore. Roadside vendors, tea stalls, and South Indian, North Indian, Chinese and Western fast food are all very popular in the city. Udupi restaurants are very popular and serve predominantly vegetarian, regional cuisine.
Bangalore is also a major center of Indian classical music and dance. Classical music and dance recitals are widely held throughout the year and particularly during the Ramanavami and Ganesha Chaturthi festivals. The Bengaluru Gayana Samaja has been at the forefront of promoting classical music and dance in the city. The city also has a vibrant Kannada theater scene with organisations like Ranga Shankara leading the way.
Bangalore is also sometimes called as the "Pub Capital of India" and is one of the premier places to hold international rock concerts.[69] The city, due to the influx of mainly software professionals, in their twenties, from different parts of India, has developed a cosmopolitan culture and attitude. This has made Bangalore a dynamic and eventful city.
