Mumbai Under ‘Malaria’ Turmoil; 4 Die In 24 Hrs

Malaria has gripped Mumbai tightly into its jaws, with the death toll adding another 4 during the last 24 hours.

According to civic functionaries, malaria claimed 9 lives in the last six days.

Civic executive health officer Dr. J Thanekar, who found around 100 mosquito breeding spots in the F South and North wards during a Saturday morning survey, said, “We are a bit worried about malaria.”

“This is because there is water stagnation at most construction sites there,” Dr. Thanekar said.

The civic administration has been under fire from corporators for not taking enough steps to put a control over the mosquito threat.

Malaria has taken 26 lives in the last 48 days since the first showers and the overall monsoon-related death toll to 54 since June.

On Friday, a 54-year-old Worli occupant died within six hours of being admitted to KEM Hospital in Parel.

Dr. Neera Kewalramani of the civic epidemiology cell, said, “He was a chronic smoker and came to KEM with severe breathlessness.”

Other malaria victims were a 55-year-old Kandivli inhabitant who died in Bhagwati Hospital in Borivli; a 55-year-old Worli resident who succumbed to falciparum malaria at Kasturba Hospital in Chinchpokli; and a 75-year-old woman from Parel who died at the Prince Aly Khan Hospital in Mazgaon.
