Leryn Franco
Paraguay's Leryn FrancoLeryn Franco (born 1 March 1982 in Asunción) is a Paraguayan athlete who specializes in the javelin throw. Her personal best throw is 55.38 metres, achieved in May 2007 in Fortaleza.
Summer Olympics
Franco competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics for Paraguay where she was 21st in Group A and finished 42nd overall. At the 2008 Summer Olympics Franco again competed in the javelin representing Paraguay, where she finished next-to-last at 51st. Had she done her personal best (55.38 m = 181' 8 3/8") she would have placed 36th. During the Games' opening ceremony she garnered some media attention because of her good looks.

Strike on issue of 6th Pay Commission brings the nation to halt

New Delhi, Aug 20, 2008: A nationwide strike on the issue of 6th Pay Commission brought the nation to a grinding halt Wednesday. The call of strike given by leading labor unions supported by communist parties and trade unions affiliated to them affected almost the whole nation.
Air passengers were worst hit as were train services in many states including West Bengal and Bihar. Several flights were cancelled as union employees sat on dharnas and shouted slogans blocking the entrance of the airport in many places.
Stranded passengers mostly on local routes had a harrowing time as there were no alternative arrangements for them. With 22000 Air Port Authority of India employees staging protests, most prepaid taxiwallahs too had not come to airport and so the passengers who got to the airport had to walk miles to get a taxi or auto in the national capital.
But the worst hit was West Bengal where life remained completely shut down. Markets, schools, colleges and all other institutions were closed. Even private sector business institutions were closed as public transport was not available in any part of the state including Kolkata, the state capital. All trains leaving from Kolkata were cancelled.
Left affiliated trade unions had called for strike demanding the removal of anomalies in the 6th Pay Commission implementation, rising inflation among other things.
According to reports, eight trade unions including the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and Centre for Industrial Trade Union (CITU) and 40 employees' federations are supporting the strike.

SBI launches loan scheme for poor heart patients
State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest commercial bank, today launched a loan product aimed at the poor heart patients. Named ‘SBI Hrudaya Suraksha Scheme’, the exclusive loan product is extended only for patients undergoing cardiac treatment at the Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bangalore.
The loan product was launched at the hands of Muhammad Yunus, founder, Grameen Bank of Bangladesh and Nobel Laureate for peace in 2006.
Speaking on the occasion, SBI Chairman O P Bhatt, said SBI has been taking several initiatives to reach out to the larger sections of the society and the new loan scheme is aimed at helping the poor to undergo heart surgeries was one such initiative. The bank will come out with many more complex products in association with Narayana Hrudayalaya in the future, he said.
Mahpara Ali, chief general manager, SBI, Bangalore, said the SBI Hrudaya Suraksha Scheme is a hassle-free loan product that will help the poor patient meet the shortfall in his medical expenditure.
Under the product, SBI would extend around 80 per cent of the medical expenditure or Rs 50,000, whichever is lower. The borrower will have to repay the loan in six months with no interest for the first three months.
Later, the loan amount will have to be repaid at an interest rate of 8.5 per cent. However, the loan scheme is available only to poor patients and as per the recommendation of the hospital. The bank expects to lend to about 30-50 patients per month initially, she said.
“We need to bring in innovative schemes and investments to shore up healthcare cover in the country. Healthcare, especially heartcare, needs huge investments. The present demand is 25 lakh heart procedures a year, but only 80,000 procedures are carried out across various hospitals,” said Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, chairman and managing director, Narayana Hrudayalaya.
Ali said, “Talks are on with Narayana Hrudayalaya as to how to link self help groups (SHGs) in Karnataka for healthcare schemes. Integration of SHGs and healthcare schemes are being worked out. State Bank of India along with few non-government organisations (NGOs) in Karnataka has exposure to 50,000 SHGs and has disbursed loans to the tune of Rs 200 crore,” she added.
