VARANASI: A number of schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in the district witnessed 100 per cent passing results in the senior school certificate examination (Class XII) announced on Friday.

While the schools including Delhi Public School (DPS), Varanasi, The Aryan International School, Little Flower House and Sunbeam Academy witnessed 100 per cent results, other schools including Dr Amrit Lal Ishrat Memorial Sunbeam School
(DALIMSS), Sigra, Sunbeam School, Bhagwanpur and Sunbeam School, Lahartara followed them closely with 99.9 per cent, 99.7 per cent and 99.4 per cent passing results respectively.

Among the school toppers, Siddharth Khanna (96 per cent) secured the highest marks in science group, followed by Naman Jain (94 per cent) and Piyuli Mukutawat (93 per cent) of the Aryan International School. Ekta Aggrawal (95.5 per cent), Kriti Goel
(95 per cent) and Nikita Kejriwal (94.5 per cent) were the toppers in commerce group in the school.

Similarly, Mohita Jaideep (92 per cent), Tarun Singh (91.2 per cent) and Sweta Jain (91 per cent) topped in science stream, while Akash Kandoi (92.8 per cent), Swikriti Aggrawal (90.4 per cent) and Ashish Tulsyan (90 per cent) were toppers in
commerce group from DPS, Varanasi.

Little Flower House witnessed two joint toppers in Anand and Amit, with each securing 94 per cent marks in the science group, while Sunbeam Academy had toppers in Sumantra Chattopadhyaya (92 per cent), Abhishek Baghel (90 per cent) and Vishesh Chopra (89 per cent) in that group.

Saumya Kumar Singh (92.2 per cent) topped in science group while Sugandha Arora (90.2 per cent) secured top position in commerce group at DALIMSS, Sigra. Similarly, Sunbeam School, Bhagwanpur had toppers in Tanistha Som (95.2 per cent) in
science and Akansha Upasini (95.2 per cent) in commerce group. Ruchika Singh (92.2 per cent), Saloni Shukla (92 per cent) and Md Areeb Ali Khan (91.8 per cent) were toppers from Sunbeam School, Lahartara.

Gandhinagar: The Election Commission (EC) has cleared the request of the Gujarat government to start giving pension to retired state employees in accordance with Central government's sixth pay commission recommendations.

The move will benefit nearly 3.13 lakh pensioners, even as it puts an extra Rs 650 crore burden on the state coffers. The government had to approach the EC as it failed to issue a government resolution (GR) for implementing the sixth pay panel for the state's pensioners before the electoral code of conduct came into force. In a marked contrast, it promptly issued a GR for state employees. BJP was on tenterhooks, as failure to implement new pension scales would have meant a setback during the
forthcoming polls.

Bhati Airtel launches IPTV services

Bharti Airtel on Monday became the first private player to launch its IPTV services under the brand—Airtel Digital Television interactive.

IPTV services provides television content through broadband connection. " We will now be able to offer a single knock on the door experience with our triple play services through which Airtel will deliver voice, broadband and TV and video
entertainment," said Bharti Airtel Telemedia services president Atul Bindal.

The customer would have to pay Rs 3999 as one time activation charges. The company has come with two price points for IPTV subscribers: Rs 999 per month for 135 channels, a broadband connection and a landline connection. The other package is for Rs 599 per month which comes bundled with 117 channels and a broadband connection. The company will offer a single bill for all these three services.

The service has been launched for the NCR region. " Unlike DTH service which is mass-based, IPTV service is targeted at the 7-8 metro cities," he said. The company will soon launch in Mumbai and Bangalore in a phased manner.

Mr Bindal said the company would leverage on the existing Airtel customer base to drive the penetration of DTH and IPTV services.

Srinagar, Jan 18: The Jammu and Kashmir Employees Joint Action Committee has threatened to go on agitation against the government if the administration did not implement the sixth pay commission recommendations immediately.
“We are ready for dialogue with the Joint Action Consultative Committee or any other committee formed by the government. But if the government did not keep its promise made with the employees’ leaders we would be left with no option but to start agitation against the administration,” convenor EJAC and JCC senior member, Muntazir Mohi-u-Din said in a statement today.
He said the EJAC leaders including Muhammad Khursheed Aalam, Farooq Ahmad Renzu, Abdul Qayoom Wani, Nazir Ahmad Mir and other senior leaders were in consultation with the governor N N Vohra over the implementation of sixth pay commission in the state.
“After consultation with the EJAC leaders, the governor had formed a committee to fix the modalities for implementation of the sixth pay commission. The committee has already given its report to the governor which was forwarded to the authorities for implementation.” he said, adding, “But despite the orders from the governor the sixth pay commission has not been implemented yet.”
He said the delay in the implementation of the sixth pay commission was causing problems for the employees.
“Since the announcement of the sixth pay commission in India, there is a sharp increase in all commodities. The employees are facing problems in meeting their day to day demands,” he said.

While history was made in the United States on Tuesday, style statements, namely the crew cut sported by a certain Barack Hussein Obama, emerged as a new fad among Bangaloreans.

The Obama cut is fast edging out the Ghajini look among youngsters — a little more hair, and there you are!

Parlours across the city said customers, especially youngsters (collegegoing and young professionals), were opting for the ‘Obama cut’.

Sameer Khan, a hairdresser who owns a parlour in Shivajinagar, said he had already liberally used his scissors on three customers, asking for a cut like that of the new American President.

“They specifically asked for the Obama cut. I had to check a catalogue, and after studying a photograph of Barack Obama, I cut their hair,” he said.

Celebrated hairstylist Javed Habib, who has salons all over the country, said, “There isn’t a big difference between the Obama and Ghajini cuts. The only difference is that the Ghajini look is a tighter cut and there are two lines, vertical and horizontal, running through. A short haircut typifies a certain hardness of character, which is essential in leadership roles.”

Parlours in Bangalore are bracing for more requests after the Presidential swearing-in
ceremony in Washington on Tuesday.

The ‘Obama cut’ tops the popular vote among the fairer sex with some of them urging their boyfriends to shear their locks. “My boyfriend has long hair,” says Roshni Rajgopal, a 22-year-old media professional. “I want him to go for the ‘Obama cut’. It’s neat and it also has a toughness about it.”

The no-nonsense crew cut was popularised by the military. Today, the short crop has many variations — surfer, mohawk, buzz, and bowl — which range from sporty to smart to soft.

However, it’s the age of ‘whatever works, dude’. So, a walk down Bangalore’s popular streets will give you the entire range of haircuts — short, long, shoulder-length, emo (or the punk cut), and even no hair.

Inauguration speech: Barack Obama calls for return to 'old truths'

Barack Obama today called on Americans to embrace a "new era of responsibility" and work with courage and selflessness to guide the United States through the economic crisis and back to a position of global leadership.

In an inspirational inaugural address after being sworn in as the 44th President of the United States, Mr Obama told the nation: "Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin again the work of remaking America."

He portrayed the United States as a country built on the sacrifice and hard work of immigrants, pioneers and slaves and said that a similar sense of sacrifice was called for now.

"For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies," Mr Obama said from the steps of the Capitol as an estimated two million watched in sub-zero temperatures.

"It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours," Mr Obama added. "It is the fire-fighter’s courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent’s willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

"Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends - hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism - these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history.

"What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.

"This is the price and the promise of citizenship. This is the source of our confidence - the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny. This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed - why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath."

Before his speech, as he took the 35-word oath of office, Mr Obama stumbled, mixing up the words as his wife watched on, smiling broadly.

But he was soon back to his oratorical best as he delivered an inaugural speech likely to go down in history not just for the fact that it was delivered by a black man, but for its stirring call to arms in the face of economic and geopolitical crises.

Mr Obama began by saying that his 43 predecessors as president had delivered their inaugural speeches "during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace" but also, occasionally, "amidst gathering clouds and raging storms".

He said: "That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

"These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land - a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

"Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America - they will be met."

Spelling out the broad lines of his recovery plan, he continued: "We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished.

"But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that time has surely passed.

"For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act - not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place and wield technology’s wonders to raise health care’s quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. And all this we will do."

Mr Obama also took care to reach out to the world beyond and promise a more inclusive foreign policy.

"We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan," he said. "With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the spectre of a warming planet.

"We will not apologise for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defence and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

"For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

His relevance endures and grows especially because of his eloquence as a spokesman for democracy. In recent years, the political side to Lincoln's character, and his racial views in particular, have come under close scrutiny, as scholars continue to find him a rich subject for research. Life

Born in a backwoods cabin 3 miles (5 km) south of Hodgenville, Kentucky, Lincoln was two years old when he was taken to a farm in the neighbouring valley of Knob Creek. His earliest memories were of this home and, in particular, of a flash flood that once washed away the corn and pumpkin seeds he had helped his father plant. His father, Thomas Lincoln, was the descendant of a weaver's apprentice who had migrated from England to Massachusetts in 1637. Though much less prosperous than some of his Lincoln forebears, Thomas was a sturdy pioneer. On June 12, 1806, he married Nancy Hanks. The Hanks genealogy is difficult to trace, but Nancy appears to have been of illegitimate birth. She has been described as “stoop-shouldered, thin-breasted, sad,” and fervently religious. Thomas and Nancy Lincoln had three children: Sarah, Abraham, and Thomas, who died in infancy.
Childhood and youth

In December 1816, faced with a lawsuit challenging the title to his Kentucky farm, Thomas Lincoln moved with his family to southwestern Indiana. There, as a squatter on public land, he hastily put up a “half-faced camp”—a crude structure of logs and boughs with one side open to the weather—in which the family took shelter behind a blazing fire. Soon he built a permanent cabin, and later he bought the land on which it stood. Abraham helped to clear the fields and to take care of the crops but early acquired a dislike for hunting and fishing. In afteryears he recalled the “panther's scream,” the bears that “preyed on the swine,” and the poverty of Indiana frontier life, which was “pretty pinching at times.” The unhappiest period of his boyhood followed the death of his mother in the autumn of 1818. As a ragged nine-year-old, he saw her buried in the forest, then faced a winter without the warmth of a mother's love. Fortunately, before the onset of a second winter, Thomas Lincoln brought home from Kentucky a new wife for himself, a new mother for the children. Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln, a widow with two girls and a boy of her own, had energy and affection to spare. She ran the household with an even hand, treating both sets of children as if she had borne them all; but she became especially fond of Abraham, and he of her. He afterward referred to her as his “angel mother.”

Barack Obama sworn in as new president of the United States

Barack Obama was sworn in as America's 44th president today in front of an estimated two million people who flooded central Washington for a distant view of history.

But even as he arrived at Capitol Hill in an armoured limousine with his predecessor George W Bush, US security agencies were urgently investigating a potential threat against him from an East African terror group.

According to a joint bulletin from the FBI and Homeland Security, US intelligence officials had received information that people associated with a Somalia-based Islamic terror group might try to travel to the US with plans to disrupt Inauguration Day.

The alert said that US counter-terror officials have grown concerned in recent months about the threat posed by the militant al-Shabaab group and a cell of US-based Somali sympathizers who have traveled to their homeland to "fight alongside Islamic insurgents".

But Russ Knocke, a Homeland Security spokesman, said: "This information is of limited specificity and uncertain credibility... As always, we remind the public to be both thoughtful and vigilant about their surroundings, and to notify authorities of any suspicious activity."

Unaware of the threat, hundreds of thousands of people began arriving in central Washington from before dawn for a distant view of history and the right to say 'I was there' when America's first black president was sworn in.

Vast crowds braving freezing cold crammed into the National Mall and mobbed streets leading onto the central thoroughfare, clogging up the Washington metro system and roads into the city centre more than five hours ahead of the handover.

After attending a church service this morning, Mr Obama and his wife, Michelle, arrived at the White House at 10am (1500GMT) for a courtesy call and a final cup of coffee with President and Mrs Bush.

He then travelled with Mr Bush to Congress to prepare for his inauguration shortly before noon (1700GMT) appearing on the steps of the Capitol about 15 minutes earlier to vast cheers from the crowd and the chant 'Obama! Obama!'

The inauguration took place amid unprecedented security. About 8,000 police were deployed and a total of 32,000 military personnel are either on duty or on standby.

The Secret Service launched its final security sweep of downtown Washington at 3am. An hour later special Metro trains were already filled to capacity and darkened roads into the city were packed with traffic.

The final crowd figure was anyone's guess, but it was expected to dwarf that for all previous presidential inaugurations, including the 1.2 million who attended Lyndon Johnson's swearing-in in 1965.

Mr Bush departs from office with the lowest approval ratings of any US president and leave his successor two foreign wars and an economy crippled by the credit crunch. Mr Obama's most potent weapon will be the vast fund of goodwill he enjoys both in the United States and overseas.

Yesterday, Mr Obama paid tribute to Martin Luther King on the holiday which marks the birth of the slain civil rights leader.

"We will come together as one people on the same mall where Dr King’s dream echoes still," Mr Obama said, in a nod to the transformative 'I have a dream' speech that King delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963.

"As we do, we recognise that here in America, our destinies are inextricably linked. We resolve that as we walk, we must walk together. And as we go forward in the work of renewing the promise of this nation, let’s remember King’s lesson: that our separate dreams are really one."

Unknown on the national stage before an appearance at the Democratic Convention of 2004, Mr Obama, 47, was propelled to the presidency on the back of his own skill as an orator, allied with an unflappability and strategic conviction that enabled him to see off Hillary Clinton in a bruising campaign for the party's nomination.

His oratorical skills were to be on display again in a 17-minute inaugural speech that is expected to stress the themes of shared responsibility, echoing John F Kennedy's famous plea 28 years ago today: "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country".

Mr Obama took the oath of office on a Bible used by his political hero, Abraham Lincoln, at his first inauguration in 1861. His swearing-in will be followed by the U.S. Marine Corps band playing "Hail to the Chief" and a 21-gun salute.

India’s Dipika Pallikal, the second seed, blew two match points as she went down to arch-rival Low Wee Wern of Malaysia in five games in the girls singles final of the 14th Asian Junior squash championship at the ICL Academy courts, here Monday.

The top seeded Wern won the 49-minute encounter 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, 9-11, 12-10.

final, second seed Ivan Yuen of Malaysia overcame top seeded Leo Au of Hong Kong 11-6, 6-11, 11-8, 11-4.

While Dipika, ranked 50 in the world, matched her Malaysian rival stroke for stroke and at times even looked the better among the two, she was unable to finish off the contest when she was ahead in the fourth game.

Dipika showed far more variety in her game, but some errors at critical juncture helped Wern, ranked 42nd, to escape from the jaws of a certain defeat.

The match looked a repeat of British Open junior final, where the two had met last.

Earlier, Dipika, after losing the first game, came back strongly to go 5-0 up in the second and went on to level at 1-1.

It was touch-and-go thereafter with Wern winning the third game and Dipika the fourth with both players being prone to errors.

While the Sixth Pay Commission favours government employees, a pay hike for them leads to non-government employees facing a lot of problems. A simple peon gets Rs. 7000 but daily labourers remain where they were.

THE SIXTH Pay Commission declares that the salary of government employees has increased. Now it is a debatable question that is it right or wrong? I thought it is a wrong decision because of this the non-government employees are faced a lot of problems. Because of this the government employees are getting a salary of not less than Rs. 7000 but in that case, daily laborers or a businessman cannot get a proportionate amount.

A simple peon also gets Rs. 7000 but daily labourers remain where they were. So the dream of a secular country is vague in this context, because rich are becoming richer and poor are becoming poorer. The maximum amount of the country’s money is with the upper classes of the people. Upper section because the government employees are considered as powerful and respected in society, whereas the number or percentage of government employees are less in society and they affect the total system. Like when the price of commodities increases it is not a big deal for government employees but it is a big problem for the rest of the people in society. So the common men have to manage with a limited budget.

A simple example -- in a marriage function of a government employee who can afford to give a grand party, the price rate suddenly increases and they get the vegetable from the market. So after that if a common man goes to the market to buy something they get nothing or if they get something than it is at a high rate. Again in the feast the extra amount or the food left by the guests on their plates would be sufficient for a common man. So a large amount of food is wasted because they can afford to buy all this and this is because they get a good salary. Why are they paid this much? Is it because they are doing their duty properly? If they are doing their duty correctly then its ok but it is not so.

An example; in a sub-collector’s office the employees reach office at around 10:30 am or 11am go home for a lunch break before time but came back at around 3 or 3:30 pm and the office closes at 5pm. So why are they paid so much.

Recently in schools the fees have increased because of the decision of the Sixth Pay Commission. So who will benefit from this declaration? The government should reconsider because India is not only peoples by rich sections but also vast sections of the poor.

Sixth Pay Commission: BJP asks J&K govt to implement 6th pay panel report

Jammu (PTI): The BJP on Tuesday demanded that the National Conference (NC) led coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir should pay heed to the demands of government employees and immediately implement the recommendations of the 6th Pay Commission.

"The NC-led coalition government is turning a blind eye to the demands of employees. We ask the government to immediately implement the 6th Pay Commission recommendations and fulfil their demands," BJP's legislative party leader Chaman Lal Gupta told reporters here on Tuesday.

The employees have been agitating on this issue for the past several months and leaders of both the Congress and NC had promised during electioneering that they would implement the pay panel recommendations if voted to power, he said.

"But now despite coming to power they are keeping mum thereby causing mounting discontent among the employees," the saffron leader said.

He recalled that even the previous Congress government of Ghulab Nabi Azad had given the impression while presenting the state budget that the pay panel recommendations would be implemented and adequate funds would be allocated for the purpose.

There are several other issues such as poor supply of electricity and water that the government should address immediately, he added.

The Glass House which is the venue of the flower show was constructed in1889. Over 200 varieties of flora which flower only in winter are the highlight of this year’s show. For security reasons, door frame metal detectors, hand metal detectors, and
security cameras, are being deployed at the entrance to Lalbagh, the Glass House, and other places.

Interesting stalls such as ‘Hasire usiru’, and ‘Parisara sneha’, will be on display. Entry to the show will close at 5 pm and the show will close at 7 pm. Entry for school children will be free on Saturday January 24.

BANGALORE: The Indian Railways - that gigantic organization that forms an integral part of the country's economic and social support system - is In the South Western Railways' Bangalore Division alone, the scheme is a major favourite with passengers.

Statistics show that despite the limited number of Tatkal seats, in every consecutive month, along three major lines, the number of tickets in demand and those issued has always been higher, in some cases, almost double.

This, railways officials explain, is because when it comes to issuing tickets to those in the waiting list, passengers in the Tatkal waiting list are given first preference over general passengers. Tatkal tickets are available, at an additional fee, to passengers five days before the day of the journey.

South Western Railways charges Rs 150 for a sleeper class Tatkal ticket and Rs 200 additional fee, more than the actual fare, for 2nd class and 3rd classA/C coach.

Though the additional charges vary as per the peak season, officials add that there is a proposal to make the Tatkal fees uniform throughout the year. The peak season of April, May and June, including a bit of the Dasara rush, is when the railways
see the highest demand for this service. Bangalore divisional railway manager Akhil Agrawal said the Karnataka Express that runs between Bangalore and New Delhi, is almost always booked completely.

In December 2008 alone, the seats confirmed under tatkal scheme were over 7,900, while the numbers of tickets available were a wee bit over 6,900 under the sleeper class alone. riding high on the revenue accrued through the Tatkal Seva scheme.

The railways make a tidy penny out of the service. Last year, the revenuegenerated from Tatkal scheme alone was over Rs 300 crore all over the country. Bangalore gets a fair chunk of it too. Several complaints of discrepancies and passengers being
left in the lurch continue to make some noise. But the tatkal scheme continues to be that last resort to millions of rail travellers.

NEW DELHI: Parents could end up having to pay more than the Rs 500 hike in fees for private schools recommended by the Bansal Committee, which submitted its report to the Delhi government on Tuesday. The schools have unanimously said the proposed hike is too little and have threatened to move court if the recommendation is implemented.

Many private schools are demanding that they be allowed to hike fees by 50% to meet the increase of 40%-50% in the salary of teachers as per the Sixth Pay Commission. The schools are also seeking the government's approval to charge Rs 8,000 per student for arrears to teachers, which is far more than the limit of Rs 4,500 set the committee which went into the issue.

"Putting a cap of Rs 500 on the fee hike has no rationale. Thankfully, it is only a recommendation as of now. But if the government ends up considering it, we may even move the court. We cannot implement the provisions of the Sixth Pay Commission unless we hike the school fees enough," said S K Bhattacharya, president, School Action Committee (SAC) ^ a body of all the school organizations in the capital.

The seven-member Bansal Committee was constituted by the city government to recommend a suitable fee hike in private schools which would enable them to bring the salaries of their staff on a par with the Sixth Pay Commission bands. Bhattacharya said SAC had worked out the required fee hike to be 50% as the increase in teachers' salaries, with effect from September 1, 2008, might be to the tune of 70%. The hike in salary will also be applicable to the non-teaching staff in the school.

The Bansal Committee has recommended slabs for different schools, which amounts to less hikes for bigger schools like DPS. Vinay Kumar, principal, DPS, Vasant Kunj said, "We are a big school but that doesn't mean we don't require to hike the fees. We have 200 regular teachers and 4,000 students. The minimum fee hike we require is between Rs 800 and Rs 1000. The arrear per child works out to be Rs 16,000."

Kumar said the government can't have it both ways. "They cannot ask us to not hike the fees suitably while telling us to increase the salary of teachers."

Ameeta Mulla Wattal, principal, Springdales School, Pusa Road said that her school will be run in a deficit if the fee-hike is capped at Rs 500. "If this hike is approved, we will have to stop all building development programmes, community programmes over the next two years. We may also pay staggered amount to our teachers as arrears over a longer period of time," said Wattal.

Though the government has now appointed a sub-committee to work out the technical aspects of the Bansal Committee report, schools say the move will only waste time. "Arrears are mounting. How will we afford it? The government should take a decision fast," said S L Jain, chairperson, National Progressive Schools' Conference.

Wattal agreed, "Besides arrears, Class XII is soon going to move out and the new nursery class will be coming in. A decision has to be taken this session itself. If the government had to go about the entire matter again by a making a sub-committee now, what good was the Bansal Committee?" Wattal said.

Schools say classifying schools into different categories doesn't seem feasible as this would take a long time to accomplish. Bansal Committee itself had taken two extra months to decide on the recommendations after talking to the representatives of several schools and also parents. "Now the sub-committee will probably have to do a survey or receive a proforma from schools to fix the hike for every school. It will be a lengthy process," said L V Sehgal, principal, Bal Bharti School, Ganga Ram Hospital Marg.

PATNA: CPI general secretary A B Bardhan appealed to the Nitish Kumar government to take proper initiative to hold dialogue with the striking employees to end the 10-day indefinite strike of the non-gazetted employees, secretariat staff and fourth
grade employees.

The indefinite strike began on January 7, demanding implementation of the Central Sixth Pay Commission recommendations. In between, the finance department officials held talks with associations of employees which had not gone on strike.

Bardhan said that the government should enter into dialogue with the representatives of striking employees and accede to their demands. "Their demand is simple. They want cent per cent implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations,"
Bardhan said.

According to him, several states had implemented it. CPI parliamentary party leader Gurudas Das Gupta, who, along with CPI state secretary Badri Narayan Lal, accompanied Bardhan, said that the West Bengal government had also been holding talks with the employees. "Why not Bihar?" Bardhan asked, adding: "We have never said that Bihar should always remain behind. In some matters, Bihar should be ahead."

Later, Das Gupta, who is also the general secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), addressed the rally of the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation Employees' Federation held on the premises of the State Transport Corporation. Das
Gupta said that the demands of the transport corporation employees were genuine, and, therefore, the government should implement the order of Supreme Court with regard to their demands.

Srinagar, Jan 17, KONS: State government employees have called for a one-day pen-down strike on January 28 to press for their demands, including the implementation of the 6th Pay Commission recommendations and enhancement of the retirement age to 60.

The decision was announced simultaneously in Jammu and Srinagar by functionaries of the Employees Joint Consultative Committee (EJCC), a union of government employees’ organizations.

EJCC leaders, including heads of both factions of the Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC), called an emergency press conference in Jammu today accusing the state government of not fulfilling their demands despite repeated assurances, and not taking any initiative in this direction.

The union leaders said that they had held several rounds of talks with the government and on every occasion had been assured of serious dispensation of their demands, but nothing practical had been done so far.

They said that even the governor, N. N Vohra, had promised that employees’ issues would be solved once the new government took over.

“But even after the new dispensation having taken office, there has been no headway in our demands,” they said.

The five demands the employees front has put before the government include the implementation of the 6th Pay Commission recommendations, removing the pay disparities in state government employees, enhancing the retirement age to 60 from 58, increasing the wages of daily-wagers and other temporary employees, releasing COLA for public sector employees.

Calling for a pen-down strike on January 28, the employees’ leaders have threatened an indefinite shutdown thereafter if their demands are not met.

Employee leaders in Srinagar, too, have endorsed the strike call, saying that the EJAC would abide by the programme of the employees’ platform.

New Delhi With arrears to teachers mounting and the Bansal Committee’s report, to be submitted the government in November, being tabled earlier this week, schools are getting restive.

Shri Ram School has sent notices to parents asking them to submit around Rs 23,000 in three installments towards clearing ‘arrears’ of teachers. The installments are due in January, March and May. Shri Ram School, which runs its junior school in Vasant Vihar and senior wing in Gurgaon, has sent circulars apprising parents of the amount that each student will have to pay.

The school’s senior wing does not come under the purview of the Delhi government and hence the Delhi Education Act does not govern it. But the junior wing, according to school officials, comes under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The circular has been sent to all parents. The managing committee, comprising parents and government representatives, approved the amount, school officials said.

“When the government has asked us to pay the arrears in January and April and implement the pay hike, where else are we supposed to get the money from?” Chairperson and founder of Shri Ram School Manju Bharatram said.

She said it was just a circular informing parents who have children in the Delhi branch that as soon as the government’s decision on the fee hike and arrears comes in, this is the amount they would need to shell out. “This is not a bill. It’s just a circular,” she said.

According to the Education Minister A S Lovely, Education Secretary Rina Ray has asked for 10 days to review the recommendations. Sources say the report recommends that no more than Rs 4,500 should be collected from students for arrears.

In the Shri Ram School, the circular sent out on January 16, fees for 2009-10 school year would be Rs 84,000 after a “major revision”. Currently, the fees are around Rs 79,000. The non-refundable development fund for new admissions (2009-2010) would be around Rs 35,000. Earlier, it was Rs 25,000. The quarterly tuition fees total to Rs 6,300. After factoring in the impact of the Sixth Pay Commission, it would be Rs 6,800, according to the circular.

Towards arrears, two installments of Rs 9,194 each are due in January and March and an installment of Rs 5,264 is due in May.

“The school is not a money-making machine but is run on the fees paid by students,” Bharatram said. “As it is, the delay in the Delhi Government’s decision about the fee hike has delayed the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.”

The arrears are to be paid to the teachers from January 1, 2006, according to the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.

Haryana Education officials said they were clueless about the fee hike issues. Education Minister Mange Ram Gupta could not be reached for comments.

Various other schools have asked parents to expect an increase in fees but are waiting for the government’s decision before they announce the amount due to parents.

PANAJI: Associations of university and college teachers in the state have decided to form a common joint co-ordination committee to approach the state government for the expeditious implementation of sixth pay commission recommendations.

Representatives of University and College Teachers' Association-Goa (UCTAG), Goa University Teachers Association (GUTA) and the Government College teachers met on January 15 at Dhempe College, Miramar, to discuss the issue.

At the joint meeting convened by UCTAG on Thursday, it was mooted that a joint co-ordination committee be formed of the organisations.

The committee will approach the government of Goa and concerned authorities for the speedy implementation of the new pay scales to college and university teachers in the state.

The new scales are as per the recommendation of the Ministry of Human Resource Development notification and the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.

UCTAG has already met the director of higher education and requested him to do the needful for the speedy implementation of the new pay scales.

ALLAHABAD: To express resentment against the state government on the issue of implementation of Sixth Pay Commission, the employees of Jal Sansthan staged a demonstration at Collectorate and went on a day strike on Friday. Though the water supply was not affected but the main office and all the zonal offices were locked to express their resentment.

The main resentment of the employees was that though Jal Sansthan was included among the beneficiaries of the Sixth Pay Commission in the ordinance issued on August 22, but they have not been included in the ambit of the beneficiaries. Only the state government employees and the teachers were given the benefit of the Sixth Pay Commission which would be effective from January 1.

The employees and the officers of Jal Sansthan participated in the strike under the aegis of Uttar Pradesh Jal Sansthan Karamchari Sangh and Jal Sansthan Engineers Association.

Their main concern was that though they are associated with the important work of supplying water to the city but they have are not included in the beneficiaries of the recommendations of Sixth pay Commission.

It is mention worthy here that Jal Sansthan does not get any economic help or grant from the state government . The Jal Sansthan distribute its salaries and meet its other expenses through the fund generated by it and the water taxes collected from the people. They have questioned the very rationale of not including the Jal sansthan employees from giving them the benefit of Sixth pay Commission.

The proposed merger of Jal Sansthan with Allahabad Municipal Corporation also angered the employees.

MUMBAI: Thousands of Mumbaikars will come out on the streets Sunday morning to take part in the Mumbai Marathon 2009.

So far, the event has attracted over 43,000 entries in various categories for the four-hour test of endurance for the final prize totalling to $250,000 (Rs.1.2 billion), a spokesman for Mumbai Marathon said here Saturday afternoon.

The race will begin and end near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus - one of the sites targeted by the terrorists in the Nov 26 attacks.

As in the past, Mumbai Marathon promises to be a mega-celebrity event with the bigwigs from the world of big business and glamour rubbing shoulders with the rulers and other movers and shakers of Mumbai.

Leading Mumbaikars in the run shall be Anil Ambani, Milind Soman, Arjun Rampal, Vinay Pathak, Shreyas Talpade, Rahul Bose, Om Puri, Tara Sharma, Lillete Dubey, Dolly Thakore, Anand Mahindra, Amit Chandra, Archana Chandra, Sanjeev Kapoor and Annabelle Mehta.

The Mumbai Police and Traffic Police, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), the state government, Indian Navy and other agencies shall be actively involved to make the event safe and successful.

The spokesman said that in addition to tight security all over the route of the race, three helicopters shall be deployed to ensure that the event goes off smoothly.

NEW DELHI: Parents could end up having to pay more than the Rs 500 hike in fees for private schools recommended by the Bansal Committee, which submitted its report to the Delhi government on Tuesday. The schools have unanimously said the proposed hike
is too little and have threatened to move court if the recommendation is implemented.

Many private schools are demanding that they be allowed to hike fees by 50% to meet the increase of 40%-50% in the salary of teachers as per the Sixth Pay Commission. The schools are also seeking the government's approval to charge Rs 8,000 per
student for arrears to teachers, which is far more than the limit of Rs 4,500 set the committee which went into the issue.

"Putting a cap of Rs 500 on the fee hike has no rationale. Thankfully, it is only a recommendation as of now. But if the government ends up considering it, we may even move the court. We cannot implement the provisions of the Sixth Pay Commission
unless we hike the school fees enough," said S K Bhattacharya, president, School Action Committee (SAC) ^ a body of all the school organizations in the capital.

The seven-member Bansal Committee was constituted by the city government to recommend a suitable fee hike in private schools which would enable them to bring the salaries of their staff on a par with the Sixth Pay Commission bands. Bhattacharya said SAC had worked out the required fee hike to be 50% as the increase in teachers' salaries, with effect from September 1, 2008, might be to the tune of 70%. The hike in salary will also be applicable to the non-teaching staff in the school.

The Bansal Committee has recommended slabs for different schools, which amounts to less hikes for bigger schools like DPS.

Vinay Kumar, principal, DPS, Vasant Kunj said, "We are a big school but that doesn't mean we don't require to hike the fees.

We have 200 regular teachers and 4,000 students. The minimum fee hike we require is between Rs 800 and Rs 1000. The arrear per child works out to be Rs 16,000."

Kumar said the government can't have it both ways. "They cannot ask us to not hike the fees suitably while telling us to increase the salary of teachers."

Ameeta Mulla Wattal, principal, Springdales School, Pusa Road said that her school will be run in a deficit if the fee-hike is capped at Rs 500. "If this hike is approved, we will have to stop all building development programmes, community
programmes over the next two years. We may also pay staggered amount to our teachers as arrears over a longer period of time," said Wattal.

Though the government has now appointed a sub-committee to work out the technical aspects of the Bansal Committee report, schools say the move will only waste time. "Arrears are mounting. How will we afford it? The government should take a decision fast," said S L Jain, chairperson, National Progressive Schools' Conference.

Wattal agreed, "Besides arrears, Class XII is soon going to move out and the new nursery class will be coming in. A decision has to be taken this session itself. If the government had to go about the entire matter again by a making a sub-committee
now, what good was the Bansal Committee?" Wattal said.

Schools say classifying schools into different categories doesn't seem feasible as this would take a long time to accomplish.

Padukone was born to Ujjala and Prakash Padukone on January 5, 1986, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her family moved to Bangalore, India, when she was only eleven months old. Her parents hail from Padukone village in Kundapura Taluk of Udupi District, Karnataka, India. Her father, Prakash Padukone, was a badminton player of international repute, and her mother is a travel agent. Deepika has a younger sister, Anisha, born in 1991.

Padukone attended Sophia High School in Bangalore. She completed her Pre-university studies at Mount Carmel College in Bangalore, India. While in high school she played badminton at the state level like her father and was a member of her father's badminton club. However, she wasn't keen on pursuing a career as a badminton player and abandoned it to concentrate on her ICSE exams.

Modeling

While pursuing her studies in college, she decided to pursue a career in modeling. Over the years, she has modeled for well-known Indian brand names such as Liril, Dabur Lal powder, Close-Up toothpaste and Limca. She received many prestigious modeling offers, which included brand ambassador for the Jewels of India retail jewellery show. Padukone hit the international scene when Maybelline made her their international spokesperson.

At the 5th annual Kingfisher Fashion Awards she was awarded the title "Model of the Year". Shortly afterward, she was chosen as one of the models for the Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar for 2006 and won two trophies at the Idea Zee Fashion Awards: "Female Model of the Year - (Commercial Assignments)" and "Fresh Face of the Year" later that year. Padukone was also chosen as the brand ambassador of Kingfisher Airlines and later Levi Strauss and Tissot SA.

Acting

After pursuing a successful career in modeling, Padukone branched out into acting. She started by starring in the music video for the song Naam Hai Tera from the independent pop album Aap Kaa Surroor by Himesh Reshammiya.

In 2006, Padukone made her cinematic debut in the Kannada film Aishwarya starring opposite actor Upendra. She later made a successful Bollywood debut in 2007 with Farah Khan's international hit Om Shanti Om opposite Shahrukh Khan.[9][10] The film featured her portraying 1970s star Shantipriya and later as Sandhya, a young woman who looks exactly like Shantipriya. Her performance was well received, earning the actress a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award as well as her first Filmfare Best Actress nomination. Taran Adarsh from indiaFM noted, "Deepika has all it takes to be a top star — the personality, the looks and yes, she's supremely talented too. Standing in the same frame as SRK and getting it right is no small achievement. She comes as a whiff of fresh air!"

"American Idol" is sending Katrina Darrell to Hollywood. Season 8 of the number one rated show (for the past four years) got off to a memorable start with auditions in Phoenix, Arizona. As with past years, "American Idol" kicked off its season with auditions of the thousands of hopefuls, some amazingly talented, some not so much.

Katrina Darrell would fit somewhere in between the two categories. Slim, beautiful, and clad only in a mini - bikini, Katrina Darrell defiantly performed in front of a visibly surprised panel of "American Idol" judges. Performing a mediocre rendition of "Vision of Love," Darrell got passes from both slack-jawed male judges, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson. New judge Kara DioGuardi offered a very vociferous negative. Paula Abdul, never one to hurt anyone's feelings, said nothing about the performance until after Darrell was told she was going to Hollywood.

But you knew the moment bikini girl Katrina Darrell was singled out on "American Idol" that at least her audition would be memorable. In a segment leading up to the audition, Ryan Seacrest, the host of "American Idol," approached the near-nothing wearing Darrell and, taking her hand, said, "I didn't even see your hands." Then there was a brief flirting scene, with Katrina Darrell telling Seacrest that she was going to make out with him and Seacrest, eyes noticeably averted to the point of strain, hesitatingly saying that he thought it was against the rules.

Katrina said she wanted to be "noticed." And she was, to the point of distraction. Being nude has that affect on people.

Walking into the audition room, eyes were raised all around. Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson could not decide whether to smile, laugh, or simply gawk. There were a couple "Wows" from the two female judges. Randy Jackson asked the contestant, "Do you go out to all auditions dressed like this?"

Katrina Darrell: "No, just this one."

Simon Cowell said, "Let me tell you: It's smart." Randy laughed.

Kara DioGuardi, not impressed, asked the contestant to do a turnaround "for the guys," then pointedly asked Simon if there was anything else he'd like to see. He said, "I'm fine."

Bangalore (PTI): Bollywood's Deepika Padukone, Indian Railways and the sixth pay commission seemed to dominate the minds of Indians in 2008 with the three being among the most searched words on the internet.

Bollywood icons ruled the roost in 2008 among users of Yahoo India Search as they were included in almost all the categories, according to Yahoo India, a leading internet company which announced its most popular searches, themes and trends of the year gone by.

Deepika Padukone topped the top personality searches by users along with Shilpa Shetty and Aishwarya Rai. Users also looked for information on issues affecting their daily life: the sixth pay commission, bomb blasts and the UPA trust vote were the most searched key words in the news category.

The launch of iphone, the Harbhajan Singh-Sreenath row and Bangalore blasts were also among the top news searches for 2008.

Searches in the sports category comprised cricket, Sachin Tendulkar and the Indian Tour of Australia.

Films, including 'Singh is King,' 'Dasavatharam' and 'Kuselan' were searched heavily by users.

Cricket, Katrina Kaif and Asin (of Ghajini fame) were among the top searched words on Yahoo India Mobile.

"Extreme proliferation of information and paucity of time is fuelling the human desire to get the right answers faster than ever before, prompting them to look for newer search experience which integrates relevant text, images and video content
information from across the web onto a single search results page," said Gopal Krishna, VP, Head of Audience, Emerging Markets, Yahoo.

should be accompanied by a cloth-lined self-addressed unstamped envelope of size 12” x 10”

CAT Eligibility
The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPa [45% in case of the candidates

belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC)/ Scheduled tribe (St) or Persons with Disability (PWD) category], of any of the

Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions

established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC act, 1956, or possess an

equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent

qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing higher secondary

schooling (10+2) or equivalent. The percentage obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be based on the

practice followed by the university/institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree. In case of the candidates

being awarded grades/CGPa instead of marks, the equivalence would be based on the equivalence certified by the

university/institution from where they have obtained bachelor’s degree. In case the university/ institution does not have any

scheme for converting CGPa into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by the IIMs by dividing obtained CGPa

with the maximum possible CGPa and multiplying the resultant with 100.

Candidates appearing for the final year bachelor’s degree / equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed

degree requirement and are awaiting results can also apply. Such candidates must produce a certificate from the

Principal/Head of the Department/Registrar/ Director of the university/ institution certifying that the candidate is

currently in the final year / is awaiting final results and has obtained at least 50% marks or equivalent (45% in case of

candidates belonging to SC/St/PWD category) based on latest available grades/marks.

ADMISSION POLICY OF IIMs: Each IIM admits students independently. the Common admission test (Cat) is conducted jointly by

IIMs. However, each IIM follows its own admission process, independent of the other IIMs. It should be noted that performance

in Cat is one of several inputs used by IIMs to judge the suitability of a candidate, first for group discussion and/or

interview and then for final selection. the IIM to which the candidate has applied, evaluates the candidate in each of a set

of different areas of achievement, including Cat performance. Each IIM independently decides what weightages should be given

to the various areas. Admission process followed by each IIM is given in the respective institutional profile.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT: If an applicant is inadvertently allowed to take the Cat in violation of the admission requirements

(eligibility criteria) of the IIMs, he/she cannot, at a later date, use that as a right to claim that he/she meets the

eligibility requirements of the IIMs.

SCHOLARSHIPS/FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: It is the endeavour of all IIMs that no student be denied opportunity to pursue the

Post-Graduate Programme in Management for want of adequate financial resources. Substantial need-based scholarships are

available for students belonging to economically disadvantaged families. (Please see the Brief Institutional Profiles in the

Bulletin for details.)

CAT SCORECARD: All the eligible candidates who take Cat 2008 will receive Cat scorecards by mid-January 2009, by mail, from

the IIM to which they had sent their Cat application Forms. The scorecard will be valid only for one year. a candidate who

loses his/her scorecard during the year may obtain a duplicate card on payment of Rs. 250/- by Demand Draft, from the IIM

that had mailed the original scorecard.

NON-IIM INSTITUTIONS: Institutions, other than the IIMs, which also use Cat scores for their admission process, will be

provided Cat scores of the candidates who have applied to them, along with suggested guidelines on how to use the scores.

IIMs do not have any role, other than providing Cat scores, in the admission processes of these institutions. IIMs do not

ascertain the quality of programme/degree offered by these institutions before agreeing to provide Cat scores.
